I shall miss him very much at the hospital. I trusted his care and admired his genuine concern for his patients. May the Lord and His Word give comfort, peace and courage. Isa 61:3 He give beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garments of praise for the spirit of heavy heartedness.... excerpt-- Even the Lord shed Tears You do not grieve alone, others grieve with you. Ryan Teel left a message on August 1, 2012:
Dear Mrs. Rutherford and Family, I was so very saddened to hear of Dr. Ernie's passing. He holds a very special place in the hearts of my family. God worked through him back in 1989 and saved Wanda Teel's life, and we will forever be indebted to him. There was never a doubt in our minds that if Dr. Ernie had not agreed to take over her case, I would not have my Mama here today. I know she loves him like family and has faithfully kept in touch with him for the past 23 years. How do you re-pay someone who saved your life? I hope in some small way that the outpouring of love will help ease your pain and bring a proud smile to your faces. As he was an angel here on earth, he is now an angel in Heaven. God Bless Dr. Ernie and your entire family. Much love...... Ryan Teel

I will always remember Dr. Rutherford and his alter ego Dr. Lee fondly. He used to always keep us laughing with his jokes. I knew him from SFMC and also through my sister, Jan Drewry, who worked with him, Dr. Blondin and Dr. Harter for several years. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family.

Our city and surrounding region lost a great physician and teacher, along with the most brilliant, kind, and compassionate person I have ever known. I am reminded though of the words of my granddaughter, that: "He's in a place so great we can't even imagine." I am so very grateful that Ernie was my No. 1 doctor, my advisor, and my friend. I trusted him completely! There are no words to express the deep and heartfelt sympathy I feel for Ileta, Phillipa, Jason, and the rest of his very special family.

I only met Ernie and Ileta for the first time a few months ago, but had heard about them for years from my friend of 20 years who was fortunate enough to have them as his close friends. Upon meeting them it was like we had known each other for ever! Ernie was so charming and funny! Ileta obviously still in love with him after all those years and still laughing at his jokes, which I know she had probably heard a hundred times! What a treasure and a blessing! Tragically taken way too soon, but never, never forgotten. He will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him! He will be missed by many! What more can any of us hope for than to be missed when we are gone!

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our beloved Dr. Rutherford. Dear Mrs Ileta & Family, Dr Rutherford was an extrordinary man. I worked with him as a nurse at E.A. Conway. Not only did he correct my Dads htn that no other MDs could but he also performed wonders with my father in law James Holyfield who was probably the last pt he saw in Start last Friday evening. He always treated his patients the way his mother taught him. He always told them "You are the boss". I know as soon as she saw him, she told him how proud she was of him because he was the BEST! I will miss him greatly. I will continue to keep your family lifted up in prayer until we see him again. Love, Sam Charrier & family

To the Family of Dr. Rutherford, Dr. Rutherford was my Mother and Daddy's doctor. They both thought so much of him as did we all. He was a very compassionate, caring person. He seemed to be so much more than your doctor. He came to the hospital to see my Mother about 2 days before she passed away. When he came out of ICU he had tears in his eyes and told us she was one of his favorite patients. He stated she did everything he told her to do concerning her health and she was the first of his patients who had truly listened to him. He was our Daddy's doctor for several years afterward. We always enjoyed taking our Daddy to see Dr. Rutherford, since he always had his wonderful smile and there was never any doubt he truly cared about his patients. I am sorry for the loss of your very special husband, Dad, brother, and Uncle. The medical community has lost a great doctor and the world has lost a wonderful man. He was a courageous man. Our family is devastated over the loss of your loved one. He has treated our family since he began his practice. My dad Billy McCoy was a patient of his as most of my family. He and my dad had a special bond. My Mom is crying everyday because she says she feels like she has lost one of her children. God bless all of you and know that he made a wonderful impression on so many people. Love to family
