William Elton Butch Smith, Jr. went home to be with his precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the morning of April 25, 2016, after five months of living with pancreatic cancer. A memorial service will be held at Cook Baptist Church on Saturday, April 30, at 3 p.m. with visitation immediately preceding beginning at 2 p.m.He was born at home November 13, 1941, to William Elton Bill Smith, Sr. and Daisy Ophelia Jarmon Smith, and grew up in Ruston, LA. William, who was known by many as Butch, studied mechanical engineering for four years at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now Louisiana Tech University) before graduating in Math Education in 1966. After teaching a short time in Port Arthur, TX, he returned home to Ruston, where he joined the National Guard and worked in construction. He spent about twenty-five years as owner of Butch Smith Cabinets, leaving many to appreciate his God-given talents. He and his wife Bonita were married for 50 years and had two sons and five grandsons. After his retirement, he loved working in his yard and raising fruit trees, tomatoes, and hot peppers. He also loved his church family and his Bibles and commentaries and the opportunity he had to help teach his men connect group at Cook Baptist Church, where he was a member since 1985.William was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother Ruth Rhodes Smith, his brother Oliver Smith, step-sister Barrilynn Kennington and husband Butch, mothers-in law Alverne Martin and Margaret Worsham, brothers-in-law Don Leblanc, John Romer, Mike Worsham, and Dennis Gantt, and sister-in-law Suzanne Cupples. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Bonita Worsham Smith of Ruston, LA, and his sons William Elton Will Smith, III, and wife Cammi of Cave Creek, AZ, and Jonathan David J. D. Smith and wife Julie of Ruston, LA, a brother John Ben Smith and wife Pat of Ruston, LA, sisters Shirley Leblanc of Weston, LA, Geri Romer of St. Louis, MO, and Annette Murphy and husband Gene of Simsboro, LA, and step-sister Lana Ruth Ambrose and husband Mike of Monroe, LA. Sisters-in-law include Cyndy Gantt of Athens, LA, Ann Worsham of Dubach, LA, Jann Colvin and husband Billy of Chatanooga, TN, Terri Federick of Choudrant, LA, Cathy Frechette of Choudrant, LA, and brothers-in-law are Gary Cupples of Houston, TX, John Butch Haughton and wife Chris of Clay, LA, and Mike Haughton and wife Louise of Choudrant, LA. He is also survived by his father-in-law Henry Maxwell Mac Worsham, who lives next door and was his very special friend.His much loved grandsons are Devin and Keagan Smith of Cave Creek, AZ, and Ian, Niven, and Luc Meyers of Ruston, LA. He also leaves behind special nieces and nephews, cousins, church family, caregivers, and other friends.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Cook Baptist Church, Ruston, LA, 2000 Cooktown Rd, Ruston, LA.
