Butch and Elsie were married on February 6, 1974. They enjoyed a wonderful life together, traveling to various places across our beautiful country. Most of their travels were either in a 5th wheel camper or via a lovely motor home, and they made friends in the parks wherever they went. Meeting and visiting with new people were a delight to them; being of a warm and friendly nature, people were naturally attracted to their presence. The enjoyment of those travels led them to be in the Campfire Campers Camping Club, the Louisiana Dutch Oven Society, and the D’Arbonne Dutch Oven Cookers.
He had a great love for his children and grandchildren as evidenced by the time and attention he gave to their many activities. Many a ball game was attended; Brahman cattle were shown; go-cart races were raced; grandchildren spending fun week-ends for “Papa time” gave him untold pleasure; trips were taken; grandparent’s day and school programs were a must; and the hunts, oh, the hunts, what a high! He was a member of two hunting clubs, the D’Arbonne Hunting Club and the Twin Creek Hunting Club.
People just automatically loved Butch. His easy-going manner and warm smile made loving him easy. There is nothing he would not do for family or friends in need, giving both his time and energy. In his last couple of years, his body ravaged by cancer and treatments, the love and kindness shown to his many friends and family have come back to him in countless ways and in countless visits from far and wide.
Butch enlisted in the US Naval Reserves on February 23, 1967, and was honorably discharged on February 23, 1973. He was a Vietnam veteran and served his country in that capacity from May 16, 1968, until November 16, 1970, with his last assignment on the USS America. Commendations received during his tenure with the navy were: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He furthered his education with a number of courses and training while in the navy.
Butch was a talented employee for whatever business he worked. He was in the oil field for about four years, moving from roustabout to driller in that time and also worked at the glass plant(currently Ardagh Glass) for a time. Being trained as an electronics technician at what is now Louisiana Delta Community College in Ruston served him well. However, the bulk of his working years were in sales positions at which he excelled, primarily due to his pleasing personality, and being self-employed in the cattle raising business, which was his true love.
Most importantly, he obeyed the gospel by being baptized for the remission of his sins at the University Church of Christ in Monroe, LA, on February 17, 1974. In fact, he and Elsie cut their honeymoon short and came home for him to be baptized.
In short, Butch was loved and admired by all who knew him. His character was pure; he was honorable, warm-hearted, easy-going, and brave.
