A memorial service for Weldon K. Chandler will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Reverend Leslie Stephens will officiate. Private family interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.Mr. Chandler died early Tuesday, September 26, at the Alpine Senior Care Center in Ruston, Louisiana, after a long illness.He was born in Ida, Louisiana, to Gladys Allison Chandler and Dennis B. Chandler on August 17, 1920.In 1943 he earned a B. A. in music from Louisiana Tech, where he played string bass in a band, the Tech Collegians. In August 1943 he married Era Byrd Pullen of Jonesboro, Louisiana.Mr. Chandler served in World War II. He attended flight school at Northeast in Monroe and was stationed in the Philippines with the Far East Air Force Band.After the war, he and his wife settled in Shreveport, where they taught in the Caddo Parish public schools. Mr. Chandler started the band at Hamilton Terrace Junior High and was its director for eighteen years. He earned a Master degree in music at Louisiana State University. He was also principal bassist with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and played with touring companies for a number of years.Mr. and Mrs. Chandler completed Master degrees in library science at Louisiana State University in 1967, after which they moved to Ruston. He worked in Technical Services at the Louisiana Tech library until his retirement in 1976. All his life he enjoyed the outdoors and for many years had a camp at Lake Bistineau, where he loved to fish. During his last years he resided at Alpine Senior Care Center.Known for his strong character and dry wit, Mr. Chandler will be greatly missed by his many friends and family members. He is survived by a sister, Eva Lina (Bebe) Snell of Trinity, Texas; two children, Julie LEnfant of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Kenneth Andrew Chandler of Shreveport; one granddaughter, the Reverend Jamie LEnfant Edwards of Greensboro, North Carolina; a grandson, Brian Rachal, also of Greensboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.The family wishes to thank Mr. Chandler devoted caregivers, especially Patty Hamm Reynolds, Pamela Cooper, and the staff at the Alpine as well as Professional Hospice Care. Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Scholarship Fund at Trinity United Methodist Church.
