A celebration of life for Rev. Wayne Lee Sistrunk, 83, of Bernice, La. will be held at the Evergreen Baptist Church in Bernice at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 31. Rev. James Miller and Dr. Barry Joyner will officiate. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 until time of service. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Baptist Church cemetery.
Bro. Wayne was born, March 16, 1939 in Bogato, Texas and passed away on May 25, 2022 in Bernice, La. He grew up as a farmer in the West Texas Panhandle. He loved to play baseball and was a baseball coach throughout his early adulthood. He was a graduate of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas in 1975, graduating from Plainview High School in 1957. He surrendered to preach the gospel in 1967 at the First Baptist Church of Halfway, Texas. During his 55 years of ministry, he shepherded churches in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. He had decided to retire this July which would have been his 10th anniversary at Evergreen Baptist.
Wayne loved to fish and watch sports. He fell in love with the LSU Tigers when he moved to Louisiana and the New Orleans Saints took the place of his Dallas Cowboys. BUT his first Love was Jesus Christ and he always would ask people he met if they knew his Savior.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Vera Sandiford Sistrunk, brother Marvin Dale Sistrunk, son Ronald Wayne Sistrunk, a granddaughter Cinnamon Cruz and in-laws Ed and Janie Smith and sister-in-law, Ilona Smith.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 62 years, Karen Beth Smith Sistrunk, daughters, Lezlie Addison of Bernice, Jimi Johnson (Wayne) of Dubach and Victoria Denning (Gary) of Helena, Montana. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kyle Pittillo, Lynzee Giamalva Jeremy Johnson, Tiffany Hollis, Kenneth Ray Clark, John David Clark, Ashleigh Hursch, Patricia Garrison, Jenna Garrison and Jacob Denning, 16 great-grandchildren, brother-in-laws, Eddie Smith (Betsy) and Rickey Smith (Sandee) and a sister-in-law, Katherine Sistrunk, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers are Ernie Hall, Bob Stiles, Wayne Johnson, Curtis Smiley, David Cox and Mike Reeves. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Ray Clark, John David Clark, Mike Smith, Sr. Larry Elee, Ronald Thompson, Roger Simpson, Eddie Smith, Rickey Smith, Bubba Williams and the men of Evergreen Baptist Church.
