Terry Wayne Johnston of Ruston was born July 27, 1952 in Lovington, New Mexico to Glynn and Imogene Johnston. He went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2023.
Terry graduated from West Monroe High School early and enlisted in the United States Army on September 4, 1969, where he proudly served until March 8, 1972.
He returned from his military service and enrolled in NLU, where he was a bull rider on the rodeo team. After having his teeth knocked out a second time, he retired from bull riding, much to his parents’ relief after paying those dental bills. Realizing he received the tools and knowledge in telecommunications from his military service, he began working for South Central Bell in 1973. He retired from BellSouth in 2002 and from AT&T in 2008. He was honored his son Timothy followed his footsteps when he joined him at BellSouth in 2000.
He enjoyed spending his retirement at his hunting camp in Sikes, Louisiana, which he called Johnston’s Pine Resort. There was no place on Earth he loved being more than his camp. He shared his love of hunting with his children and grandchildren. Besides hunting, his other passion was baseball, as evidenced by his extensive baseball card collection. He was a constant presence at his grandsons’ baseball games and tournaments. Spending time with his grandchildren was very important to him. Pops never missed his grandchildren’s awards ceremonies or performances, most recently his oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation from his alma mater.
Terry is survived by the love of his life, Rhonda Greer Johnston, with whom he had just celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary in April; his mother Imogene Johnston of West Monroe; daughter Tara Mahaffey and husband Chad of Baton Rouge; daughter Shelley Hendrix and husband Chad of Eros; son Timothy Johnston and wife Emmy of West Monroe; grandchildren Molly Johnston, Avie Hendrix, Caroline Johnston, Drew Johnston, Lake Hendrix, Patrick Mahaffey, and Camp Hendrix. He was preceded in death by his sister Janet Easterling, his nephew Jason Easterling, his brother Michael Johnston, and his father Glynn Johnston.
Proudly serving as pallbearers are his son Timothy, his sons-in-law Chad Hendrix and Chad Mahaffey, his nephews Michael Johnston and Rick Brown, his grandsons Drew Johnston and Lake Hendrix, and his cousin Mackie Brister. Honorary pallbearers are the men of the Calvary Baptist Church Friends and Followers Sunday School class, 2 grandsons, Patrick Mahaffey and Camp Hendrix; his lifelong friends Luke Mills and Sam Peppers, and his cousins Julian Johnston and Royce Calhoun.
