Sybil New Aswell
Sybil Aswell went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 7, 2023. Sybil was born to Alfred Loy New and Cornelia Elizabeth Dring New in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 17, 1930. During her early childhood years, Sybil lived in several locations. She graduated from Choudrant High School where she met the love of her life, Walter Roy Aswell. Upon Roy’s graduation and military service, they were happily married for 64 years. Sybil attended Louisiana Tech and Louisiana College. Sybil and Roy welcomed their first son, Walter Roy Aswell Jr. on June 3, 1953 and their second son Alfred Larry Aswell on November 30, 1954. Sybil’s sons were the joy of her life. A woman of faith and the heart of the family, Sybil shaped their beliefs by her tireless Christian example. Roy’s career with Illinois Central took them to different locations. Sybil began her career as a schoolteacher and enjoyed her professional career as a personal banker, lending officer and assistant vice-president of a bank. Sybil and Roy lived in Hattiesburg, MS for several years after retirement where they lovingly cared for Sybil’s parents for 18 years. In 2005, Sybil and Roy moved back home to Choudrant where they enjoyed their family, friendships and church family. Sybil loved her church dearly and was involved in many church activities. If something needed to be done, Sybil was the first to volunteer to serve others. Her generous heart filled her home with love.
Sybil was preceded in death by her parents, A.L. and Cornelia New, eldest son, Walter Roy Aswell Jr., and her beloved husband, Walter Roy Aswell. Sybil is survived by her son, Alfred Larry Aswell, grandchildren Walter Roy Aswell III and Sara Kate Aswell, sister, Jane McNeel Smith, brother-in-law, Wayne Aswell and wife Kathy as well as several nieces and nephews.
Sybil will be dearly missed by her family, friends and church family. Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church Choudrant on Friday, February 10 at 1:00 pm with the memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Homes- Ruston.
