Steven A. Hansen, a distinguished attorney and beloved member of the Monroe, Louisiana community, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on July 4, 2024, at the age of 77.
Steve was born on January 12, 1947, in Tuscola, Illinois, to Dwight Hansen and Gladys “Susie” Hansen. He was a 1965 graduate of Neville High School and went on to earn degrees from Northeast Louisiana University and Loyola University of New Orleans College of Law graduating top 10 of his class. Throughout his career, Steve was celebrated for his legal expertise and dedication, recently honored by the Louisiana Bar Association for 50 years of exemplary service. He also made significant contributions as a sought-after campaign manager, notably recognized in the renaming dedication of the James Sharp City Court building in Monroe. He enjoyed competitive shooting with his colleagues at the sheriff’s office and considered himself just an “ole country lawyer”. But on the contrary, he was known for his work by many as “Ironside.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Steve was renowned for his passions. He maintained the finest garden, with the most amazing crop of tomato plants on River Oaks Drive and was acclaimed across the city for his amazing seafood gumbo. An avid outdoorsman, Steve cherished moments spent fishing and hunting with his sons, Adam and Sam, passing on his love for nature to future generations. He and his wife, Pam, delighted in hosting boat rides on Bayou DeSiard, sharing laughter and joy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Steve’s loyalty to family extended to his role as a husband of 48 years to Pamela Gatlin Hansen, and a devoted father to Adam Jay Hansen (Julie N. Hansen) and Sam A. Riser (Zuli Riser). He took great pride in his five grandchildren: Anna Grace Hansen, Lela Hansen, Amelia Hansen, Adam Jay Hansen Jr. and Arias Riser. Steve is survived by his sister, Julia Hansen Carr, and a host of cherished family members and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Dwight and Susie Hansen and his brother, Mark Hansen. His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him, yet his spirit will forever be remembered through the countless lives he touched.
A man of unwavering faith, Steve served on the vestry at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where he dedicated his time organizing and cooking for the annual fish fry and Soul Suppers. His faith and generosity touched the lives of many, leaving an enduring legacy of kindness and service. Steve Hansen will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his devotion to family, his passion for justice, and his unwavering faith in God.
A Celebration of Life will be at 6 P.M. on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Monroe, Louisiana. Visitation will be at 4:30 until time of service.
