Peggy Ann Louise Sweatman White departed this life on April 27, 2022, at the age of 102. Ann was born in Corry, PA on February 28, 1920, to Thomas Worswick and Sada May Alcorn Sweatman.
As a young child, Ann moved with her family to Pampa, TX, where she lived through the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. Following her graduation from Pampa High School, she entered Texas Tech University at the young age of 16. It was at Texas Tech where she met the love of her life, Dixie B. White. They met in New Orleans, where Dixie and his football teammates were playing Loyola, and Ann was on the special student train to attend the game.
After their marriage on June 4, 1941, Ann supported Dixie during his football coaching career, which took them to numerous colleges and universities, eventually retiring to Monroe, LA. They reared 3 children with an abundance of love, laughter and good food. A product of the depression, Ann learned early on to sew, cook, make minor household repairs, and stretch a dollar. She inherited a spirit of adventure from her mother and took it in her stride when moving to a new town, quickly making new friends and learning to cook local foods.
Ann was passionate about genealogy and spent years researching family documents and exploring cemeteries at home and in England. Never one to let anything pass her by, she was the first in her family to have a personal email and spent hours on her computer organizing family history, honing her skills on various software products and reading the latest news. Ann’s curiosity and thirst for knowledge was well known and respected by all family members. She also dearly loved to travel, especially to the mountains of New Mexico, Colorado and Utah.
Ann was a loyal sister in her beloved P.E.O. for over 50 years; was a devoted member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where she was ordained as elder in 1999; served 10 years as Treasurer of Monroe Symphony League; was a member of the Monroe Garden Club; volunteered at Ouachita Council on Aging assisting the elderly with tax returns; and supported many other community organizations and activities.
Ann had a quiet deep faith in her Lord, believed there was a purpose and reason for everything, and that all would be well in time. She always viewed the glass as half-full, laughed easily as she found humor in almost any situation, and loved her family beyond measure.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Dixie B. White; daughters-in-law, Jill Harper White and Kathy Hensler White; granddaughter-in-law, Carrie Harkleroad White; and brother, Tom Sweatman, Jr.
She is survived by her three children, Togar White and wife Linda, Ken White, Judy White Hudson and husband Larry. She is also survived by grandsons, Matthew White and wife Jana, Barrett White and wife Anne, Cason White and wife Lani, Blakeley White, Clay Hudson and wife Elizabeth, Colin Hudson and wife Vanessa; step-grandson, Doug Jordan and wife Esther; and great-grandchildren, Cate White, Max White, Ben White, Adlai White, Dashiell White, Campbell White, Brenan White, Brison White, Henry White, Hamilton White, Henry Hudson; step great-grandchildren, Donnie Jordan and Bennie Jordan. She is also survived by loving nephews and their families.
During her last years, Ann was cared for by her devoted daughter, Judy; enabling her to stay in her home and enjoy all the activities she so loved. When she turned 100 in February, 2020, Ann was honored with a glorious celebration of her life attended by every member of her family and a multitude of friends in Monroe and beyond.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1901 Milton, Monroe, LA 71201; Cottey College, 1000 W. Austin Blvd, Nevada, MO 64772; Monroe Symphony League, P.O. Box 15394, Monroe, LA 71207-5394.
Visitation will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home–Monroe on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Graveside Service will be at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 11:00 am with Pastors John Mabray and Jonathan Wagner of Covenant Presbyterian Church officiating.
