Nettie Mae Spurlock Semmes was born on October 4, 1926, in Downsville, LA, to the union of Ransom and Guthrie Spurlock. She passed away on April 25, 2024, in Monroe, LA, at the age of 97. She was a dedicated, kind, and loving mother and grandmother. Her faith and her family were the most important parts of her life. A graduate of Ouachita Parish High School and Monroe Commercial College, she was also a retired bookkeeper who took her work very seriously.
In addition to her parents as listed above, Nettie Mae was preceded in death by her four siblings and their spouses: Inez McGee (Harold), J.R. Spurlock (Minnie Ola), Thad Spurlock (Mildred), and Billie Ponder (Jack). She was also preceded by her husband Leslie and his three brothers and their wives: Robert K. Semmes, Sr. (Peggy), Bernard Semmes (Nell), and Thomas A. Semmes, Sr. (Irene); and great -granddaughter Cassidy Hatten.
Nettie Mae Semmes is survived by her two children, Laura Laverne Semmes Salguero (Diego) and Farrell Semmes (Rhonda); four grandchildren: Michael Brown (Rachel), Brandon Semmes (Teresa), Julian Semmes (Rachel), and Katy Volentine; 12 great-grandchildren: Jasper Brown, Oscar Brown, Annabelle Brown, Ayden Semmes, Brayden Semmes, Collins Semmes, Dalton Semmes, Ellie Ruth Semmes, Kallysta Volentine, Riley Volentine, Ava Hendrix, Jaxon Black; and numerous cherished nieces and nephews.
A long-time United Methodist, Mrs. Semmes was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Until she was about 90, she was active in United Methodist Women, serving as both a Local Treasurer and a District Treasurer. She was an avid reader and an excellent cook. She was especially known for her delicious made-from scratch cakes.
The family would especially like to thank Dr. Greg Green, Dr. Assad Mouhaffel, and their staffs for many years of excellent and compassionate care. They would also like to thank the Pastor and Care Team of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe. Visitation will be held at 1:00 P.M. until time of service. Mrs. Semmes will be laid to rest at Kilpatrick Serenity Gardens under the direction and care of Kilpatrick Funeral Homes in West Monroe. Officiating will be Rev. R.B. Moore and Rev. William Smith.
Pallbearers will be Michael Brown, Brandon Semmes, Julian Semmes, Jasper Brown, Joe Dean, and Gene Ford. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tim Langston, Harold LaGrone, and Randy Parks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital if you so desire.
