Neal G, Johnson, 72, of West Monroe, Louisiana, was born June 9, 1951, in Monroe, Louisiana, and passed away July 27, 2023, in Austria while vacationing with his wife, Aimee.
Neal practiced law from 1979 until his death. He was a fine attorney whose natural gifts made him successful both in and out of the courtroom. His intellect, breadth of knowledge and easy manner set him apart. Fortunately for the legal community, Neal invested both time and energy to counsel and mentor younger attorneys throughout his long career. As one such attorney said “I don’t know how young attorneys learn how to practice law without someone like Neal Johnson. He didn’t just teach me to be a good attorney. He taught me how to be a good person.”
Neal was a long-time law partner with Jerry Jones and served as an Assistant District Attorney for Ouachita and Morehouse Parishes. He was twice appointed as an interim District Court Judge and, at the time of his death, was “of counsel” with Mennon Campbell and Wade House.
Neal possessed an abiding love for aviation. His brother, Don, taught him to fly and he earned his pilot’s license at eighteen. He later built two airplanes and was still flying his Cozy Mark IV all over the country.
Neal had a mischievous sense of humor and was well-known for pulling complex practical jokes on his friends. He loved his dogs. They traveled the streets of West Monroe in “their” truck daily, serenading other motorists with a cacophony of such intense baying that they could be heard for miles.
Neal was preceded in death by his sons, Christopher Neal Johnson and Justin Michael Lirette, and by his parents, Hazel and Hewitt Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife of thirty-one years, Aimee Johnson; brother, Don Johnson (Martha and nieces); and by all of Aimee’s family.
Neal would not have wanted flowers, gifts or grief. Join us to Celebrate His Life with our joyful remembrances of him at Bayou DeSiard Country Club August 15, 2023, from 4-6 pm.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Monroe, LA.
