Nancy Marylin Norris Hammond, 80, of Marks, Mississippi passed away at home in Monroe, Louisiana on August 8, 2020.
Funeral services for Nancy will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday August 12, 2020 at Church of the Redeemer under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home ~ West Monroe. Pastor Steve Wilkins will officiate. Entombment will follow at Kilpatrick’s Serenity Gardens Mausoleum in West Monroe. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the church.
Nancy was born on October 21, 1939 in Water Valley, Mississippi. She grew up in Marks, Mississippi as the eldest daughter of Clinton Thedford (Ted) Norris and Mary Louise Wells (Louise) Norris with her brother Ted Wells Norris. Nancy attended Mississippi College for Women graduating with a BS in Secondary Education in 1961 and received her MA in Counseling from the University of Alabama in 1965.
She married Thomas Hogue (Tom) Hammond on October 16, 1965, and they spent nearly 20 years in Memphis, Tennessee where they raised 2 children Barton Hogue (Bart) Hammond and Holly Louise Hammond and were surrounded by great friends. Nancy was a high school teacher and guidance counselor who genuinely loved her students and they loved her back. In 1994, Nancy and Tom moved to Monroe, Louisiana where they embraced the community, loved their church (Auburn Avenue Presbyterian / Church of the Redeemer), and made many more great friends.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband Tom Hammond of 54 years; children Bart and Cheryl Hammond and Holly Hammond; six grandchildren Will Clemons (23), Heidi Hammond (22), Maycie Clemons (21), TK Hammond (20), Sam Clemons (19), and Ty Hammond (16); and her brother and sister-in-law Ted and Vivian Norris.
Nancy was a true southern lady with grace and humor. She is remembered for her amazing generosity, her tremendous love for all kids, and her passion for teaching (especially southern etiquette). She was Ms Nan – the candy lady at Church, and Ms Nan – the hospitality queen where no one ever left her house hungry. But her favorite title, by far, was Nana; and she relished her role as grandmother and spoiler-in-chief.
