Graveside services for James Edward Cannon, Sr. will be held at Kilpatrick Serenity Gardens in West Monroe, LA on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 3:00 P.M. Military honors by the U.S. Navy will follow. Visitation will be at 2:30 P.M. at the cemetery.
James entered this world on August 5, 1928 in El Dorado, Arkansas and passed away on August 6, 2023 at Glenwood in West Monroe, Louisiana at the age of 95 and one day. He was the son of the late W. D. Cannon and Ouida Ricardo Cannon. James lived in El Dorado, Arkansas his young life. His life was interrupted by his call to serve his country. James joined the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class on May 2, 1946. He proudly served on the U.S.S. Tarawa as a Flight Captain attached to Squad One Able based in Japan. Seeing parts of the world many never see. James was honorably discharged on March 3, 1948. After discharge, he was authorized to wear the WWII Victory Medal. James then moved to Louisiana area and started his family. He was blessed with one son, Jimmy.
Cathy met James 23 years ago, they became friends, confidants, and helpers. They took care of James’ mother who lived to be 96 years old. Then the two took care of Cathy’s mother and she lived to be 91 years old. Then came his time, Cathy started care for James over 10 years ago and then was a continuous caregiver until his passing. Cathy and James never regretted one mile of this journey, no matter how small his request or needs, there was always a smile, a thank you and an “I love you”! In her heart and soul he was Cathy’s first priority. She loved him so much, she would do it all over again!
James loved God and Jesus and readily confessed this. He was always so grateful and profoundly thankful for all acts of kindness. Cathy and James would have prayer and thank God for his help each day!
James was multi talented and had impeccable work ethics throughout his life. He was an accomplished dancer! James was also a music and movie buff and enjoyed interaction with his dear friend, Hank. Years ago, James attended our own Mr. Billy Ledbetter’s concert in Las Vegas. Mr. Ledbetter announced from the stage that we have Mr. James Cannon, Sr. in the house tonight from Monroe, Louisiana and played “You are My Sunshine” in his honor. Local entertainers would also recognize him as an attending guest as a dancer. He was very loved and will be missed.
He is survived by his best friend, caregiver and confidant for life, Cathy Bayles; one son, James “Jimmy” Cannon, Jr. (Linda) and many other cherished friends.
