Martha Jane Burns Upshaw Anderson was born November 9, 1940, and died on July 24, 2018. She was a devoted, lifelong Monroyan. A vivid childhood memory of Martha Jane was that of holding the hand of her 54- year- old father, Bob Burns, in the downtown lobby of Ouachita National Bank, and being asked by his friends if she were with her grandfather. Martha quickly replied Yes. She got her love of people from her father, who had returned from World War I to be a businessman and she got her love of learning from her mother, Bess, who had graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University.Martha graduated from Neville High School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Louisiana State University. She also received the Doctor of Education degree from Northeast Louisiana University, now University of Louisiana at Monroe. Martha served at ULM for over 30 years as Director of Continuing Education, and later as Assistant Dean of Students. Most gratifying for Martha was her association with honor students at ULM as advisor of Alpha Lambda Delta and Mortar Board. She was awarded a fellowship to Harvard University, and later helped institute the The President Lyceum Series at ULM, bringing signal thinkers and leaders to the campus for intellectual debate. Additionally, she enjoyed working with the Northeast Louisiana Children Museum and inviting innovative Louisianians back to the community to share their creative business successes at the annual spring luncheon.Martha was well known for her graciousness, enthusiasm, undying optimism, and mostly her love of the Lord and her church Life Support Group at First West Baptist Church. She was a master bridge player, and adored the game and the friends with whom she played. The ladies at the bridge house are to be greatly praised for keeping Martha Jane happily engaged during her health challenges.Martha is preceded in death by her first husband, Elton Upshaw, Jr., sons Elton Jefferson Upshaw, III, and Judson Maxwell Upshaw, daughter Rosemary Upshaw Anderson, and stepson Patrick Anderson, Jr.She is survived by her husband Patrick Anderson, Sr., daughters Ainsley Upshaw Lewis, and Allison Upshaw Mead, grandchildren, Ainsley Anderson Herlevic and husband Vincent; Mark Kent Anderson, Jr., John Graydon Lewis, II, and Adam Upshaw Lewis. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.Philippians 4:8-9
