Luther Dean Hammons was born on July 31, 1934, in Dubach, Louisiana and went to be with his Savior on November 6, 2023. Luther served his community as a first responder with the Ruston Fire Department for 32 years. Though he had many roles in his years with the department, he is probably best remembered by his fellow fire fighters for his talent for cooking! He retired from the department in 1992.
Luther was a dedicated member of Ansley-Union Church where he sang in the choir, was the secretary-treasurer, grounds keeper and overall “go to” guy. He loved his Lord and Savior very much and took great pleasure in working within his church. He was also dedicated to his family and loved spending time with them. Whether it be his Hammons family or his Massey family, you could always count on his kind, smiling face to be there to share the moments at reunions, holidays, weddings, or birthday celebrations. Luther loved being outdoors, especially time spent on his tractor. He loved working in the garden and his time spent bush hogging and maintaining the property. He also loved traveling with the love of his life for over 40 years, Ms. Nellie Massey.
He is survived by his four daughters, Donna Brown of Dubach, Deanie Hattaway and husband Robert of Dubach, Ramie Brobst and husband Kenny of Choudrant, Dawn Mari and husband Zuheer of Ruston; brother Jimmy Hammons and wife Linda of Dubach, sister Evelyn Taylor and husband Charles of Dubach, brother-in-law Gary Franklin of Magnolia, AR; his Soul Mate, Ms. Nellie Massey, and sons David Massey and wife Barbara of Shreveport, Douglas Massey and wife Valerie of Springfield, MO, and John R. Massey of Ruston; grandchildren April and Jeremy Burnham, Kyle Campbell, Robert and Jamie Hattaway, Rachel Hattaway, Jeremy Kirkham, Dustin and Hannah Clements, Lindsay and Brooke Embry, Deanna Hunter, Noel and Chance Carlton, Jeremy Massey, Andrea and Josh Dixon, Chelsea and Jacob Parker, Christopher Lindsay, John and Halle Denwiddie, John S. Massey, Garrett Massey, 20 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended family.
Luther was preceded in death by his parents, D.L. and Mary Hammons, daughter Deborah Hammons Purvis, sisters Lois Franklin and Nancy Gay, granddaughter Shelby Massey, and great granddaughter Marjorie Hill.
Honoring Luther as pallbearers will be Robert W. Hattaway, Mason Hattaway, Kyle Campbell, Justevian Turner, Cade Campbell, Garrett Massey, and John S. Massey. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ruston Fire Department.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made, in Luther’s honor, to Ansley-Union Church, 328 Ansley Road, Ruston, LA 71270, (318) 255-3670.
