Lula Mae McKeithen Brinson went home to Jesus on April 23, 2020 at age 93.
Lula Mae was born to Levi McKeithen and Melvina Brown McKeithen on 24 July 1926 in Winnsboro, Louisiana. As a child, she excelled in school even winning a spelling “Bee” while attending Liddieville School. She played basketball while attending Delhi High School. She was in the last 11-year graduating class of 1941. The school went to a 12-year program in 1942. Her dad was a farmer and noted for raising the best “Poland” pigs and He was noted for his honesty and his “handshake contracts”; Her mom was a housewife who raised her own and 7 additional children. Like most mothers. Vina had the most influence on the young Lula Mae.
Lula Mae met her husband, Melton Sykes in 1941in Delhi while she was attending high school and he was preparing for induction into the US Army during World War II. They married 1943 while on leave from the Army and went on to have four children, Patriccia, Melton Levi, Ronnie Joe, and Amarrilus. The Sykes family lived in Winnsboro then moved to Delhi in the early fifties moving to Monroe in 1955.She was divorced in 1956. Later she met and married Luther Brinson moving to West Monroe in 1980. Lula Mae and Luther loved travelling to visit their grandchildren.
In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother, Lula Mae also loved her flower garden, her many friends, and enjoyed visiting Flea Markets all over the South. She also enjoyed shelling butterbeans, fish fries, canning/pickling fruits and vegetables with her kids and grandkids. She was a 29 year employee of Olincraft/Manville Mill until her retirement. She was a charter and lifetime member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Monroe. She also was a volunteer for nearly 20 years at Glenwood Hospital in West Monroe. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her, and passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Lula Mae joins her husband Luther Brinson,her mother and father, siblings: AC, Cecil, Russell, Aubrey, Jeanette, Henretta, Alton, Geneva, Junior, JL, Billy, and Charles as well as her son Ronnie Joe in Heaven. She is survived by her son Melton (Hilarie), daughters Patricia (John), Amarrilus, six granddaughters and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews.
