June Bloomer Swayze passed away peacefully at her family home in Monroe, Louisiana on July 26, 2019.Born December 30, 1923, in Desha County, Arkansas to James Lum and Elizabeth Hennington Bloomer, she was the last surviving child of their seven children.Mrs. Swayze was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Desha Swayze and their first son, Marcus Desha Swayze, Jr. She leaves fourchildren, Judith Lee Swayze Blackman (John), Desha Swayze, Courtney Elizabeth Swayze Eckmann (Douglas) and Christopher Reed Swayze, M.D. (Sandra Swayze, M.D.); grandchildren, John Lamar Tolar, Judith DeSha Tolar-Thomas (Michael), Richard Matthew Murrow (Reshma), Courtney Rebecca Smith Theriot (Blaze); great-grandchildren, Marcus Jabari and Joseph Dutton Thomas, Julia Marvel and Margaret Mae Theriot, as well as numerous extended family members.A devout Christian, Mrs. Swayze was a member of First United Methodist Church for 70 years, where she taught Sunday School, led the youth group, then known as MYF, and sang in the chancel choir with her husband. She was a lifetime member of the PTA, continuously involved in the activities of her children. She spent many years as piano accompanist for countless music students performing at solo and ensemble festivals.During the Big Band Era, she met her husband while both were performing with the Collie Fontana Orchestra. They continued to perform together for many years. Mrs. Swayze held various leading roles both at the Monroe Little Theatre and earlier Strauss Playhouse, then located at Selman Field. After her fifth child began kindergarten, Mrs. Swayze returned to college, earning BA and MA degrees from then Northeast Louisiana University, now University of Louisiana at Monroe. After a lifetime as wife, mother and homemaker, she taught art, English, social studies, and civics at Ridgedale Academy for 20 years. Following her tenure at Ridgedale, she continued to teach at Ouachita Christian School and Grace Episcopal School. She was also an accomplished artist, and her own paintings are beautiful oils and watercolors. During this time, she was also organist at St. Patrick Episcopal Church. Following in her husband footsteps, she learned to play golf and was recognized as most improved golfer by Golfer Digest. She also loved the outdoors, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. At age 82, Mrs. Swayze rejoined a dancing class. She tap danced with a troupe of significantly younger ladies in Janet Golson last recital, 13 years ago.Mrs. Swayze lived a long and vibrant life, another of God many blessings.Judy, Courtney and Chris are forever grateful to our dear sister, Desha, who has devoted these last 15 years of loving care and companionship to both our parents.The Reverend Lynn Malone will officiate services at First United Methodist Church Friday August 2, 2019 at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 1, 2019 from 5:00 7:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home on Lamy Lane in Monroe.Pallbearers are John Tolar III, Matthew Murrow, John Blackman, Doug Eckmann, Blaze Theriot, Michael Thomas, John Tolar, Jr. and Doug Walters.
