Memorial services for Joe W. Caskey will be held Sunday, January 21, 2024, at 3:00 P.M. at Northminster Church, 2701 Lamy Lane, Monroe. Services will be officiated by Reverend Jillian Hankamer. Visitation will be held at the church from 2:00 P.M. until service time. Private interment will follow in Arcadia, LA at a later date.

Services are under the direction and care of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. Joe was born in Arcadia on December 18, 1932, and passed in Monroe on January 10, 2024.

Joe attended Arcadia High School and graduated in 1951. He was First chair trumpet in Arcadia High School Band all four years and in All State Band in Baton Rouge. He received a music scholarship to Louisiana Tech University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Band Education. Joe was the leader of the Debonnaires Dance Orchestra and member of the Tech Band. He received his Master Degree from Vandercook School of Music in Chicago. Joe was assistant director of the Army band in the latter part of the Korean War and was transferred to Camp Zoma, Japan, where he played 17 bugle calls a day. He also was assistant director of the camp band and Army Orchestra TV weekly program.

Joe returned home in 1957, when he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Roberson. They have been married for 66 years.

In September of 1957, Joe was hired as the band director for North Monroe Junior High (later Neville Junior High). This was the opening of the new school. He finished his 20 years as band director of Neville High School Band.

After retirement from Monroe City Schools, Joe worked 20 years for Zeagler Music Company as instrument repair person. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Lamar Caskey; brother, William Caskey; and his in laws, Opal and Albert Roberson.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Caskey; daughter, Amanda Hauskild (Greg); and son, Van Wiley Caskey. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Haley Manning (Tyler), Heather Crain, William (Will) Crain (Sadie); and great grandchildren, Zoey Crain and Scarlett Crain; brother, L.G. Caskey, Jr.; sister-in-law, Gloria Caskey; nephews, Gary Caskey and Brian Caskey (Lori); great nephew, Seth Caskey (Blake); great niece, Lauren Bokesah (Adam); great-great niece, Linden Bokesah; and great-great nephew, Parker Caskey.

Our family thanks Wing I and Wing II of the Northeast Louisiana Veteran’s Home and Caring Hands Hospice Staff for their care of Joe.

Mr. C was tops in my book. He and I headed to Neville the same year- only I was the student. He mentored so many young people. Some of my fondest memories are of Bunkie band camp that he took us to each year, marching seasons, and his great sense of humor. Miss Peggy, I know you will miss him so much. Mr. Caskey believed in me and changed the course of my life by making me believe in myself. He will live on in the hearts of his band students. I am so glad we kept in touch throughout the years. I will always remember Mr. Caskey and his beautiful wife walking hand in hand at sunrise on the beach on our senior trip. Precious memories.

We were so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Not long ago Dale and I were remembering you and Joe when Joe and Dale were in the Archery Club together. The years have gone by so quickly but we still remember the good times with friends we knew in those days.Peggy, our prayers will be with you and the family today and in the days ahead. I have such a vivid memory of sitting in band. It was his left side because I was a clarinet and the clarinets were on the left side he had on brown pants, beige shirt, and a tie. He could give you a look if he heard something good or if he heard something bad. He was such a mentor to so many students.

My fondest memories at Neville High were the 4 years I played under Mr. Caskey. I started this journey 2 years prior in the 7th grade, and was devastated when he went to NHS the following year. But he loved what he did. We loved what he gave us, a true inside look and appreciation of music. You will be missed but the memories of you and the ones you gave us will never be forgotten. ❤🎺🎷🥁🎵🎶🎶🎵

We all have people in our lives that have served as a mentor, Mr. Joe Caskey was that man for many of my classmates. He had a manor of making each of us important with a lot more patience than we deserved. He handled us with a dry sense of humor that always made us feel loved. He was a master “listener” and one of the best story tellers I’ve ever encountered. We would all gather in his office to hear his latest hunting story, or to try out his latest “deer call”. As a graduate of Vandercook College of Music, he shared sound musical knowledge that provided for me, a foundation for successful career in music education. I invited him to listen to my band when I was the band director at Neville High School. His advice to the band from one session made the difference for the success of that year. His sense of musicality was amazing. We knew that he was a great band director, but I don’t think we all understood the extent and depth of his knowledge. When ever I stopped in Monroe I would try to drop my and visit. He and his wife, Peggy would listen and ask about my family, if I was lucky I would get to listen to another story. I will miss those times. I imagine all of his students can picture him standing by his podium with his green coffee cup filled with Community Coffee greeting us for another rehearsal. Mr. Caskey, you will be missed.

Mr. Caskey played a crucial role in shaping my high school character. As my mentor and role model, his influence will endure throughout my life. I'm certain he has positively impacted the lives of many, leaving behind a remarkable legacy on this earth.

So to read of Mr Caskey. He was a wonderful man and teacher. I had Mrs Caskey while at Lee Jr High for choir and then on to Neville High to know Mr Caskey. They were a special couple loving what they taught to all of us. Sending Love and Prayers to all the family.

Mr. Caskey was beloved by so many. My HS band director, I have so many wonderful memories of him and playing under his direction. Great times!
