I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Coach Chick. I am a '68 graduate of Neville and my children are RHS alums from '88 and '90. He was dear to us all and I know he is already greatly missed. My father, Bennie Hixon, whom we lost in October, was also a teacher at Neville and had great respect for Coach Chick as well.
Dr. Fred J. Vogel, Jr. left a message on July 15, 2015:
Coach Childress was a significant influence on my track career at Neville from 1962-63. I set school records in High & Low Hurdles as a result of his excellent coaching, and went on to receive a full track scholarship at Northeast. I'm truly sorry to hear that he has left us.
Carolyn Black Brooks left a message on July 15, 2015:
Christine, I am so sorry to hear about Chick. In the few years I had the privilege of knowing him, he became a precious friend, as have you. You both have certainly been a positive influence in my life. Always giving, whatever it took. It was through your devotion that we had many wonderful reunions and I was so fortunate to be a part of them and meet so many wonderful "brothers and sisters". Thank you for that. Love and prayers to you and your family.
Joe Farr left a message on July 15, 2015:
To the entire Childress family, Coach Chick was an extraordinary man that touched more lives than you can imagine. He gave people a reason to have more self confidence than they could have ever imagined, that lead all to be better than they were before they met Coach. Leaders, such as he, are very rare and we all cherish the relationships we had with him....He made the world a better place to live and his legacy will live forever ......with love and sympathy...the Joe Farr Family

Sorry to hear about Coach Chick's passing. He was one of the great coaches I had the privilege of playing for and coaching against while at Jonesboro Hodge. He was always the same, honest, hardworking, humble, yet caring coach and one of the reasons I went into the coaching field. My prayers go out to his family and friends and to Neville Nation. He will be missed.
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.

Chris, I was soo sorry to hear of the loss of Chick. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.I never knew him while a coach. His deep love of Christ Jesus was an inspiration to me, as was his faithfulness in worship and work at Alabama Presbyterian Church. He was always always there in the low for worship services and attendance and instruction in Sunday School classes. Yours and his commitment to the church and community families of the area have left a legacy and lasting contribution in the care and support of the Sibley cemetery. It has been so well kept and clean through his and your efforts to honor our families graves. Chick's smile and softy encouraging voice endeared him to do many. I will miss him! He is doing far better than any of us now, as he is in the presence of his wonderful Savior in Heaven ďThoughts and prayers, Chris!

To the Childress family I want to first tell you how grateful I am that you allowed Coach Childress to extend his life to so many people. I am a better man because of his influence on my life. I can't put into words how much Coach being in my life, molded me into the man I have become. His passion for success not in football but life has been with me from the first day I became a Ruston High School Bearcat. So Coach, from #44, Thank you now and thank you forever! I will see you in Heaven one day! Gary Williams #44

Coach Chick's leadership was an example of quiet resolve, sage advice, strength of charachter, and courage in the face of long odds. He had a kindness that inspired ordinary kid to become champions. His good works in this world touched many of us and we are better people because of his example. Coach Chick will be sorely missed. God bless him, and his family as they grieve his passing.

Our prayers go to all the family. I played for Coach Chick at Neville '69-'70. I still tell people when the topic comes up that he was my all time best coach. I was fortunate enough to have dinner with him a few years later and was just as impressed with him then as I was as a player. I think his fairness, good sense of humor and above all else, his character stands out in my mind. My wife, Katherine, went to school with his daughter, Cindy, and we were fortunate to get to know her and her husband, Phillip, and spend time with them in Destin, FL diving from our boat. He will be missed by all but his memory will always remain! God Bless you all! Brad and Katherine.

James "Jim" Willis left a message on July 14, 2015:
He was more than just a coach. Coach Chic was a real friend; he was a father figure. He took time to wrap our ankles and tend to our needs before practice and at games and then he "made" time to listen to us and offer the advice that few felt they had the time to spare. It wasn't over after his tireless efforts played a major part in helping attain another state championship our senior year. He kept on giving on a personal basis. After taking Nick White and me to a La.Tech game at Ruston, I was inspired to play football there. Whatever I may have achieved was due to never wanting to see the disappointment that I saw in his eyes on two occasions when I did not do my best at Neville. His expression said volumes that no words could ever match. I thank God and his family for sharing him with us.

Coach Chick was one of the kindest gentlemen that I have known. I played for him at Neville for three years (1961-63), both Jr Varsity and Varsity. I remember him as being a great encourager. He had a great smile and had a way about him that made you want to do your best. I was fortunate to have a nice visit with him when I came back for the 50th anniversary of the 1961 State Championship team. We will all miss him dearly, but I'm sure that he is in the best of all places now with our Father in Heaven. God Bless you Coach!

Chick was a very special person that many of us knew as "fellow orphan" and "adopted brother. ". When he was at NLU he often came to Dr. James Henderson's office for coffee, and many good laughs. This was when I got to know him outside of yearly homecomings. I can still picture his smile and hear his chuckle. He was an awesome man that will be missed.

My condolences the family. I'm a part the class of 1986 and I had the honor of playing for Coach Chick and I owe him for the decisions that I made after high school. Because of the toughness he showed us as football players I became a US Marine. I served 10 years and was a part of Desert Storm. I was honored to be a Marine because I was honored to play for my coach. Rest coach your job is done. Semper Fi

Another GREAT coach has left many memories & life lessons for all of us left behind. I loved when he spoke on Fridays before the games at Neville. Wonderful leader to many of us young people at all the schools he enjoyed working & coaching. You may never know all the love & respect we have for his man. Thank you for sharing part of your lives with us. Prayers & love are surrounding all of you.

Coach Chick, as we all knew him, was one of the most wonderful giving people I have ever known. He inspired his team members to excel beyond what they believed they could do. I was on the 1961 and 1962 Neville High School teams that went undefeated and in my Senior year by default I was thrust into the starting quarterback position. If it had not been for the encouragement of Chick and Coach Brown I don't think I could have held up to the demands of the moment. Coach Chick told me to do the best I had and it would be fine. I thank God for the inspiration of Coach Chick and Brown. May they both Rest in Peace knowing that their coaching applied to many lives far beyond the football field.
