Ureatha Jean “Sissy” Hatten Jacobs went to spend her eternal life in heaven on Sunday, February 14, 2021. She was preceeded in death by her parents, Yancy and Bernice Hatten; sisters Vanuita Walker, Marsha Emmons, Ann Winbery and Dot Scott; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Robinson Jacobs.  She is survived by her husband, Joseph D. Jacobs, Sr. of Farmerville, LA; son Joseph D. “Joey” Jacobs, Jr. and wife, Cyd Page Jacobs of Monroe LA; her daughter, Terri Jacobs Mancill and husband Mark Mancill of McKinney, TX; grandsons Jonathan Jacobs and wife Kira Clement Jacobs of Atlanta, GA, Justin Jacobs of Monroe, and Thomas Jacobs and wife Innocence Harvey Jacobs of Baton Rouge and great grandchildren Cecilia and Hatten Jacobs of Altlanta; Step-grandchildren Jessica and Jeremy Johnston of Shreveport (children Liam and Beckham) and Aly and Josh Taylor of West Monroe (children Genevieve, Vera and Lydia);  as well as one brother, Archie “Bud” Hatten of Calhoun, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Heartfelt gratitude to Myra Butler not only for her priceless gift of loving and caring for Jean but for loving us ALL like family.  Jean was born on May 25, 1933 in Sikes, Louisiana, a village in Winn Parish, to Bernice Ann Dunn Hatten and Yancy Hatten. She was one of six children that included her sisters, Vanuita, Marsha, Ann, Dot and brother Bud.  She was raised in a poor, hard-working, farming family, but she always remembered being taken care of, having good food and feeling love from her family.

Jean attended Sikes High School where she played basketball and enjoyed performing leading parts in the school plays. (She always dreamed of getting out of the country woods and becoming a famous actress or “movie star”. 🙂 While a student there, she received the American Legion Award for her strong qualities of character and good citizenship.

After high school graduation, Jean attended Beauty School in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She then moved to Monroe where she began her career as a beautician at Touchstone Beauty Shop. In her younger years, Jean won the “Miss Photogenic Contest of Monroe, Louisiana” and was a clothes model for The Style Shop and other local stores in Monroe.

Jean married her husband of 68 years, Joe, on November 21, 1953 at College Place Baptist Church in Monroe, La.  While her children, Joey and Terri, were in grade school, she served as President of the Sherrouse PTA.  She moved on from her early work as a beautician while raising her children and  began her second career where she was self-employed in real estate, renting to many students who attended college at NLU. It was not unusual to see the front yard at Jean and Joe’s full of vehicles as theirs was the house where all of the kids came to eat some of Jean’s cooking and hang out but not for too long as Jean would be sure to put everyone to work eventually.

Over the years, she and Joe lived in Monroe LA, Wilmington, NC, and Jacksonville, Florida.  They eventually moved back to North Louisiana where they settled on Lake D’arbonne in Farmerville.

Jean’s faith, family and friends were the most important things in her life. She loved her time at the beach, loved people, and could talk for hours. Throughout life, hard work and a positive attitude defined her. She gave her time, energy, and love whenever needed. Jean always had a flair for fashion and was truly a beautiful person, inside and out.

There will be no formal service at this time.  Any memorials/donations can be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home in Monroe, LA or the Alzheimer’s Association.
