JAMES W. LIPSCOMB Funeral services for the Rev. James W. Lipscomb, 92, of Ruston, LA, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18, at the John Knox Presbyterian Church of Ruston with the Rev. John Allen Bankson officiating. Interment will follow in Pines Memorial Cemetery in Ruston. Mr. Lipscomb was born on February 8, 1915, in Starkville, MS, and died May 13, 2007, at his home in Ruston. He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Thomas H. Lipscomb and Lutie Scott Lipscomb and stepmother Ethel Golding Lipscomb, brothers Edward L. Lipscomb and Dabney Lipscomb, and sister Martha L. Roark. Mr. Lipscomb served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and then as a pastor of congregations in Barrington, NJ and Philadelphia, MS. He was executive assistant to the president of Belhaven College in Jackson, MS, prior to coming to Ruston, LA, in 1957 where he was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church for 17 years, and of John Knox Presbyterian Church for three years. He then served as teacher and administrator at Whitworth Bible College in Brookhaven, MS. Upon retirement, he returned to his home in Ruston where he taught New Testament Greek at Louisiana Tech University for seven years. A true Renaissance man, Mr. Lipscomb believed that anyone with a liberal arts education could do anything. He was a talented vocal and violin musician, a scholar, pastor, preacher, and teacher. When needed, he was a carpenter, painter, plumber, electrician, mechanic, and pipe organ fixer and tuner. His avocations over the years included figure skating, hiking the Appalachian trail, camping, sailing, small boat making, and playing in the local orchestra. He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Barbara Bigelow Lipscomb; two sons, James W. Lipscomb Jr. and wife Mary of Minneapolis, MN, and Edward L. Lipscomb and wife Linda of Atlantic Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Jennifer Nobles, Benjamin Lipscomb, Melissa King, and Laura Lipscomb; five great-grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Bob Turner, Dale Boersma, Rob Pierce, Ben Lipscomb, Brad Bourgeois, and Charlie Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers will be Oscar Barnes and Volney Pierce. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Memorials may be made to French Camp Academy, French Camp, MS, or John Knox Presbyterian Church. The family would like to express special gratitude to Dr. Dale Boersma, Dr. George Smith, the caring staff of Prime Care Home Health, and devoted caregivers Ruby Gray, Dale Bailey, Linda Mason, Betty Williams, Lena Houston, Kristina Davis, and Angela Coleman.
