James Douglas Hudson (July 2, 1931 – December 19, 2023)
Doug Hudson passed away peacefully on December 19, 2023, in Monroe, Louisiana at the age of 92.
Doug is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marilyn Bunch Hudson, and his daughters Delora Walker (Bruce), and Amanda Rentz (Randy). He is preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Thomas Hudson and Viola Harrison Hudson, and his youngest daughter, Susan Johnson.
Doug was born on July 2, 1931, in Galion, Louisiana to Elbert and Viola Hudson. He attended Northeast Louisiana State College (ULM), where he was a standout lefty pitcher on the baseball team while also serving as a member of the ROTC.
After he graduated with a degree in accounting, he served for two years as an officer in the United States Army as a military police officer. Prior to his time in the Army, he married his lifelong sweetheart, Marilyn, on October 28, 1954. They would go on to have three daughters – Delora, Amanda, and Susan.
Upon completion of his military service, he moved back to Monroe from Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he would work for the Manville Paper Mill in West Monroe for more than 30 years before he retired. After retirement he would then go on to focus on the things he loved the most – his family and his golf game.
Doug’s family was his proudest legacy. In addition to three beautiful daughters, he was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren: Michael Walker, Drew Walker, and Douglas Walker; Nicole Brinker, Natalie Andrews, Wesley Rentz, and Will Rentz; Matthew Johnson, Lesley-Anne Johnson, and Sarah Johnson. He was blessed to also have fourteen great grandchildren.
Doug was an active member of First Methodist Church in Monroe, where he and Marilyn were among five founding couples of the Aldersgate Sunday School class. He was also the first baseman for the church softball league.
During his retirement, Doug had an active golf group and was one of the original members of Calvert Crossing Golf Club. In addition to his love for golf, Doug will also be remembered for having a tender spot in his heart for animals, rescuing many dogs and cats throughout his life and giving love and compassion to even the most temperamental of felines.
The visitation is scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at First Methodist Church on Loop Road in Monroe, followed by the funeral at 11:00 A.M. Rev. Brian Mercer will officiate the ceremony. Following this celebration of his life, Doug will be laid to rest at Bartholomew Methodist Cemetery in Morehouse Parish which will be held at 2:00 P.M., alongside his parents and daughter, Susan.
