Funeral services for James D. (Jim) Brown, 79, of St. Joseph, Louisiana, and Wiscasset, Maine, will be at 1:00 pm Wednesday October 20, 2021, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe. Interment will follow at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton, Louisiana.
Jim was a graduate of Joseph M Davidson High School in St. Joseph, and Northeast Louisiana State College with a degree in Business. He began his career as a sales representative at Louisiana Power and Light in Lutcher, Louisiana. After leaving LP&L, Jim decided to pursue his life dream of travel and antique collecting. He owned antique shops in New Orleans and Houston. Over the years, Jim made several trips to Paris, France, and cities throughout Italy and Europe, exploring the local culture, cuisine, and architecture.
Jim joined the US National Guard Service and completed his basic training at Fort Dix, NJ. He continued his active duty, attending annual training in the summer, until formal discharge.
Jim spent many hours visiting family and friends, sharing the stories of his travels. In his later years, Jim divided his time between his hometown of St. Joseph, Louisiana, and his second home in Wiscasset, Maine. He owned a linen shop in Camden, Maine, and was an avid collector of antiques there as well. Jim found great joy in the fine details of early 19th century furniture and collectibles. His pride and joy was a house built in 1809 that he bought and restored by hand in Wiscasset, Maine.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, J.D. and Ceceil (Baragona) Brown, and his brother Jay Lamar Brown. He is survived by his nephew, Joseph Brown (Amanda); great-niece, Caroline; and sister-in-law, Ann Fortenberry. There are also numerous cousins left to cherish Jim’s memory.
A special word of thanks is given to the staff and residents at Savannah Grand Assisted Living and Memory Care as well as Caring Hands Hospice. Their care and kindness will be forever remembered by Jim’s family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Jim’s alma mater: ULM Foundation Fund https://www.ulm.edu/foundation/makeagift.html
