After attending Southwest Texas State College – now Texas State University in San Marcos, John enlisted in the Air Force and attended the aircraft mechanic school at Amarillo Air Force Base. John first assignment as maintenance specialist was at Little Rock Air Force Base in Little Rock, Arkansas working on the B-47 bomber. The B-47 stratojet aircraft was a long range jet powered strategic bomber with it primary mission to drop nuclear bombs. His later assignment was at Anderson Air Force Base on Guam as a crew chief on the B-52 bomber aircraft for two years. The B-52 bomber was used as a deterrent during the Cold War with Russia. During his tour at Guam he worked with an Air Force chaplain on a program establishing churches outside of the base which was very successful in getting people to church who had never previously attended religious services. \tAfter John was honorably discharged from the Air Force, he was employed with Kraft Foods. Before retiring, after more than forty years, he covered sales across Northeast Louisiana earning several performance based awards. John was highly devoted to his community and his work with his home church, Highland Presbyterian, of which he was a member for forty-six years. He served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, elder, and also participated in missions. John visited many shut-ins, and traveled to nursing homes helping with communion and providing inspirational therapy to residents. One of his true loves was to cook, especially for the men monthly ministry prayer breakfast and annual Thanksgiving turkey.Throughout his life, he had a passion and a love for his family. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of wing three at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Home: Phyllis, Morgan, and Desiree and Tina at Premier Hospice.
