Hugh Owens Bourque, SrKilpatrick Funeral HomeRuston, LAFaith is planting trees you know you will never sit in the shade of.Hugh Bourque passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Terrace in Ruston, La. where he resided for th past five months. He was born April 6, 1920, in Youngsville, Louisiana, to Ricard and Katherine Cocke Bourque. Raised in Lafayette, he received his BSEE degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy, and attained the rank of Lieutenant. He married Ruth Anne Herpin Bourque on December 26, 1942, and they were married fifty-eight years prior to her death in 20O1. He is survived by his daughter, Nell Fitch and her husband, James (Sonny) Fitch of St. Francisville, La, and his son, Hugh O. Bourque, Jr, and his wife, Carol, of St Simon‚ Island, Georgia. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Lisa Allen, and her husband, Toby Allen, of Ruston, La. and Matthew Pearce of Colorado. He enjoyed spending time with his five great-grandchildren, Grayson, Gabriel, Anna Ruth, Garner and Garron Allen, who affectionately called him, Pop. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Ruth Pederson of Englewood, Florida, and a devoted nephew, Matt Bourque, of Lafayette, LouisianaAfter leaving the Navy, he worked briefly for Westinghouse and then joined Ethyl Corporation in Houston, Texas. He was transferred to Baton Rouge in 1955, and spent the remainder of his career at Ethyl, until his retirement in 1984 since retiring; he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His happiest times were spent at his tree farm in southwest Mississippi.He was active in the, Boy Scouts of America for over fifty years and was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Baton Rouge General Hospital. He received many awards, but the one he was the proudest of was being named Tree Farmer of the Year, in 2010, by the Southwest Mississippi Forestry Association0. Over the past 38 years, he planted over 40,000 trees on his property. His last outing was to supervise the planting of 1200 saplings in January of 2014.He was an active member of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, where he was often called on for his engineering and electrical expertise. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m on Saturday, April 19, in the Lafayette Protestant Cemetery in Lafayette, LA. conducted by Dr. Roger Sullivan, his longtime friend. On Monday, April 21, the family will receive visitors at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Baton Rouge beginning at 9:00 am.
