Hugh Garrett Martin Funeral services for Hugh Garrett Martin, age 96, of Bernice, LA will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Bernice United Methodist Church with Dr. Johnie Adkins, Jr. officiating the service. Interment will follow in Bernice City Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. Mr. Martin was born on September 11, 1914 in Wallonia, Kentucky and died on December 10, 2010 in Bernice, LA. Hugh was the third child born to Lethal and Ethel Larkins Martin. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps stationed in Blytheville, AR where he met his wife of 65 years, Floe Lambert. They were married on February 13, 1945, in Chicago, IL. After the war, they settled in Sacramento, CA where their only child Stephen Hugh was born. In 1948, the family moved to Bernice where he owned Martin's Store, a grocery and general merchandise business. After retiring from his business in 1983 he enjoyed raising cattle. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a brother. He is survived by his wife, Floe Martin of Bernice; son, Steve Martin and wife Phamie of Summerfield; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; Caroline Byerman and husband David and their children Amanda and William of Las Vegas, NV; Thad Martin and wife Melissa and their son Russell Hugh of Austin, TX; Susan Martin and husband Andrew Hecox of Raleigh, NC; brother, L. I. Martin, Jr. and wife Billie of Cadiz, KY; sister, Lucy McAtee of Cadiz, KY; and a special niece Debbie Vlahakos and husband Vic of Houston, TX. Mr. Martin is also survived by Ann Comfort, his caregiver and best friend of 14 years. Other devoted caregivers are Felipa Guzman, Mae Bertha Taylor, Lucille Thompson and John Levingston. Pallbearers will be Mike Comfort, Bill Mitcham, James Harty, Leroy Stenzel, Pepper Green, and Ira Simpson. In honor of Mr. Martin, a lifelong Methodist and member of the Bernice United Methodist Church for 62 years, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Bernice United Methodist Church, PO Box 189 Bernice, LA 71222 Visitation will be 4:00 P.M until 7:00 P.M.
