HELEN PESNELL WOOTEN McMEEN Kilpatrick Funeral home Ruston, LA Helen was born in Lincoln Parish, LA on August 9, 1931; and passed away Thursday October 18, 2012 at Stoney Brook Memory Care Assisted Living, West Monroe, LA. She was educated in public schools in Choudrant and Chatham, LA prior to attending Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA. She received her BA degree, majoring in Home Economics and Science, in three years graduating in August, 1953. Upon graduating from Louisiana Tech, she began her teaching career in Lake Charles, LA. She also taught in New Orleans and Houma, LA before moving to Greenville, SC. Three years later, her family moved to Birmingham, AL where she resumed her teaching career at Vestavia Junior High School After the tragic death of her husband, Buster Wooten, in an automobile accident, she and son, Tim, moved to Atlanta, GA. There, she attended Emory University in search of her Master's Degree. She also taught at Lakeside High School in DeKalb County. In 1967 she met and married Jim McMeen. She became a full time housewife, and took up the game of golf at the Atlanta Athletic Club in 1975, a game she dearly loved, She won many golf tournaments including: Georgia Seniors Golf Association, Women's Division, Low Gross three times; Gladys Denson Memorial First Flight plus many other tournaments. When she was not playing golf, you could usually find her on the practice range. During her golfing years, she made 14 Hole- in- Ones. Helen was a member of Atlanta Athletic Club Women's Golf Association and Atlanta Women's Golf Association. She will be remembered for her integrity, loyalty, love of family and friends and everlasting smile. Helen was a true friend who never spoke a disrespectful word of anyone. She led a Christian life, and was a member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church. Helen is survived by her husband, Jim McMeen Atlanta; son, Tim Wooten and his wife, Denise Destin, FL; three stepdaughters: Claudia McMeen Brazell and her husband, Richard Columbia, SC; Nancy McMeen Freeman and her husband, John Wade; and Beth McMeen Marietta, GA; grandchildren: Maribeth B. Edwards Craig, Leslie Brazell Columbia, Jenny Freeman Atlanta and Tyler Wooten Destin; great grandchildren: Logan Edwards and Eli Wilcox Columbia. She also leaves a brother, W.E. Pesnell and his wife, Jeanette, of Choudrant, LA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, Kermon and Mattie Lee Pesnell and her sister, Linda P. Duke predeceased her. A graveside service and internment will be at Sibley Cemetery, in Choudrant, LA, on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 1:00 PM, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Pallbearers will be Michael Pesnell, Kaleb Pesnell, Joey Smith, Jody Smith, Landry Smith, Ross Killgore, and John Wade Freeman.
