Graveside services for Gladys Ruby Hall Salley will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Bernice City Cemetery. She was born July 25, 1923, in Port Barre, Louisiana and went to her much-anticipated final resting place with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 22, 2019 at age 95 in Bay City, Texas.At the time of her birth, the family lived in the home of Grandpa (J. H.) Wilson. Her father Milton Hall was a Southern Baptist minister and her mother Mary Ada Hall played piano at services while the family lent their voices in old-time gospel singing. Later, her mother went to Jackson Hospital and it nearly broke Milton heart. He died soon after in New Orleans, and his death caused the family to break up.Gladys and two siblings went to live in the Louisiana Baptist Children Home in Monroe, while other siblings went to live with other family members. Gladys made the best of her situation by turning to music and touring with the Children Home Chorus. During one of these performances, Charles Fred Salley would see her and fall in love. The two were married May 30, 1940, in Monroe, Louisiana and ran Salley Wholesale Grocery in Monroe, and they would welcome Charlotte Anne and Charles Fred, Jr. over the next few years.Gladys was proceeded in death by her late husband of 56 years, Fred Salley, Sr. and her late-in-life love husband of two years Andy Nilles; her daughter, Charlotte Salley; her siblings, Elizabeth Morgan, Maud Lee Stevens, Frances Mae Way, Ruth McMahn, Milton Hall, James Hall, Henry Hall, and Dorothy Goldenberg; nieces and nephews Gloria Stagg, Lilly Tulles, Bennie Stevens, BF Stevens, Charles Morgan, James Morgan, William Morgan, and many other family members.Gladys is survived by her son Charles Fred Salley, Jr. and his wife Norma, and their two children Shannon Salley and Scott Salley, as well as Charlotte children, Jada Jack and Jay Jack. Gladys was fortunate to have a host of family that loved her likeno other. She is survived by sister in-law Loretta Hall and nieces and nephews Kay Morgan, Beth Morgan, Laverne Stevens, John (Ruth) Stevens, Jeanne Stevens, Glad (Jack) Martin, Lilly Jean Luthinger, Dorothy (Kenny) Satterfield, Shirley (Mickey) Burwell, Jim (Susan Ashley) Hall, Reva (Randy) Kitterman, Reba (Allan) Kingsbury, Douglas Goldenberg, Lynn (Gary) Orr, and countless other great-nephews and great-nieces and cousins.Special thanks to caretakers during her later years: Charles and Kay Morgan (along with great-nephew Dr. Charles Morgan and great-niece Carolynn Collier), Bill and Beth Morgan, Jada Jack, and most recently John and Ruth Stevens (along with great-nieces Mitzie Wiggin and Patti Drachenberg).
