GEORGE CHESTERFIELD HARROD, SR. Services for George Chesterfield Harrod, Sr., 83, of Oak Ridge, Louisiana, will be held at 3 pm Saturday, October 21, 2006, at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Claude Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Ridge Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home. George was born in Frankfurt, Kentucky, on January 29, 1923, as the fifth of ten children. At the age of nine, the family moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Following graduation, George entered the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Oakland. After being honorably discharged, he enrolled at Tulane University. Over the years he worked for Gulf Oil, Mississippi Power & Light, General Motors, Honeywell and IBM. Granddaddy moved to Oak Ridge in the fall of 1988 to be near his son, Chet, and family, after retiring from years as a technology and patent engineer with IBM. He loved his daughter, Lisa, and her children, traveling many miles to see them when he was able. He enjoyed the company of his Oak Ridge friends and travels to see his brothers. Always the gentleman, he spent his retirement helping raise his grandchildren, who fondly remember his stories of his childhood experiences in Kentucky and Mississippi, his work on the Saturn booster guidance system that sent man to the moon, and the countless stories of the streetcars in New Orleans and the benefits of a strong railroad. His last years were spent at Stoneybrook Assisted Living Home battling Alzheimer≠s disease. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Stoneybrook for the loving care shown to Granddaddy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Cleveland Harrod and Minette Steger Harrod; his son, Ronald Geoffrey Harrod; his sisters, Sadie H. Dean, Mary Selma H. Biggs, and Mildred Moody H. Monteague; and his brothers, William D. Harrod, Malcolm B. Harrod, G. Clellan Harrod, Richard O. Harrod, and Franklin D. Harrod. He is survived by his son, Chet Harrod, and his wife, Becky; his daughter, Lisa H. Magness of Easton, Pennsylvania; and his granddaughters, Michelle Harrod of Baton Rouge and Caitlin Magness, and his grandsons, Chandler Harrod of Los Angeles, California; Dr. Chambliss Harrod and his wife, Rebecca, and their expectant twin sons of Boston, Massachusetts; Bennett Harrod of Baton Rouge; and Michael Magness; and his brother Joe Harrod and his wife, Joan, as well as many loved nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Gene Allen, Tom Allen, John Rolfe Windsor, Andy Barham, Larry Arbour and Jack Mc Daniel.
