West Monroe native Dr. Ronald C. Wimberley, 68, of Raleigh, NC, died July 26. He was Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Sociology, North Carolina State University. He was predeceased by his parents, C.V. and Doris Wimberley. Survivors include his wife, Sandra; son, Christopher; sisters, Ilene Snyder and husband Greg, and Betty Sullivan and husband Glenn; brother, Dale and wife Cynthia; mother-in-law, Era Harper; nieces and nephews Rachel, Cole, Lee, Caroline, Eric, and Cara. Services and burial are at 11:00am, July 30, New Chapel Hill Baptist Church, West Monroe, with visitation at 10:00am. Memorials may be given to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, American Cancer Society, NCSU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences endowment fund, or NCSU Department of Sociology and Anthropology endowment fund.

I met Ron for the first time by chance at the 1984 Southern Sociological Society meetings in Knoxville, TN. He recruited me to the sociology doctoral program at North Carolina State University. I owe him much regarding my subsequent career. A brilliant man and sociologist, yet down-to-earth. He never forgot his roots, and in fact, his roots reflected his research agenda. Thank you Ron -- we will all miss you.
