Dot McCurry of Calhoun, Louisiana entered her heavenly home on July 10, 2022.
Dot was born in Mangham, LA, raised in Archibald, LA and spent most of her adult life in Calhoun, LA being mom, grandma and Aunt Dot to EVERYONE that she encountered. Her genuine smile and infectious laugh brightened every room that she entered. Her love was not merely contained to Calhoun, but worldwide. She became “Mama Dot” to friends that she made from Tennessee to Wisconsin to London to Los Angeles. Her star shines bright!
She worked one job her entire career as Executive Secretary at the Ouachita Coca Cola Bottling Company… any LOVED every second of it. It was more than a job to her… it was a family.
She broke barriers in the 1970’s and became one of the first female coaches of an all-boy’s baseball team at the Boy’s Club and went on to be a driving force in building a baseball complex in Calhoun where she served as Secretary of the league. She continued her coaching career for 14 years… and was an award-winning coach. Every boy and girl that played on her team knew that she loved and respected them as if they were her own child.
She was secretary of Liberty Baptist Church where she became more than just a church member, she became a community leader. Outside of her secretarial duties… she fed the homeless, made delivers in the community, acted as a “taxi service” and simply made sure that EVERYONE had what they needed. Everyone in Calhoun knew Miss Dot and everyone knew that you could always depend on her. She would literally give you the shirt off of her back if you needed it. Taking care of others and giving back to the community was what “got her out of bed” each day.
Her family and friends were the most important parts of her life and she always wanted to be surrounded by them. Whether it was playing BINGO with her sister, going out to dinner with her brother, playing cards with her daddy, holidays with her nieces and nephews, road trips with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, planning birthday parties with her “adopted” daughter, spoiling her “granddaughter”, dinner at the Cactus with her best girlfriend, arguing with her “adopted” brother or playing PO-KE-NO with “the girls”… she always had a good time and cherished every second that she had with them.
Some of the most fun times were spent with her son who was her BEST friend. Once he moved from Calhoun 35 years ago, they talked twice a day… EVERY day. They talked about the weather, about life, about good times and bad times. They loved, they laughed, and they cried together. She loved going to visit him wherever he might be in the world, and it took her places that she may have never gone before. She never met a stranger in any of those places and made friendships that lasted a lifetime. She became family to his friends and was ALWAYS open and accepting of every single person that she met and loved them for who they were… no judgement.
All of these things made her an AMAZING person that everyone wanted to know and strive to become. While she will be missed, this is not a day of sadness, but a time of celebration of the wonderful life that she had, the people that she loved and the legacy that will remain.
In a quote from one of her favorite movies, Steel Magnolias…. “… she will always be young. She will always be beautiful… and I personally feel a whole lot safer knowing that she is up there on my side”.
She is preceded in death by her father, Woodrow Phillips; mother, Gladys Gray Phillips; stepmother, Lilla Hales Phillips; sister, Peggy Phillips Piercy; husband, Buddy McCurry and mother-in-law, Marjorie McCurry.
She is survived by her son, Chester McCurry; “adopted” granddaughter, Katie Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Kirby and Sharon Phillips; sister-in-law; Gay Fryday; nephew and wife, Waylan and Karla Piercy; “adopted” daughter, Mary Adams; special friends, Mike and Kathy Sanford and Edie Lemley; a host of nieces and nephews; and a wealth of loving family and dear friends.
