MCREE, DOROTHY ELAINE CALHOUN, 85 Our mother, Dorothy “Dot” Elaine Calhoun McRee passed away on September 7, 2013. Dorothy was born in Monroe on February 15, 1928 to Ida Eugenia Calhounand James Daniel Calhoun. Mom grew up all over Louisiana, as her family followed her father in his work in sawmills. She graduated from Louisiana Tech with a degree in Biology, going on to work for the Bendel-Wright Clinic in Monroe. She spoke fondly of her time at the Clinic and of Drs. George Wright and William Bendel. It was Dr. Wright who would deliver Dorothy's first child, Briana. She retired from the State of Texas and spent her time traveling to local Texas towns with friends and enjoying theatre productions in Victoria, Texas. Though she spent much of her adult life in Texas, she was a tireless unofficial ambassador of the State of Louisiana. Nothing made her happier than sharing stories of her childhood, growing up in her beloved home State. Mom loved art, music, history, reading, growing African violets, dogs and watching football. She had a great sense of humor and was so full of what she described as “useless information” that she had to be handicapped when playing Trivial Pursuit, being required to answer ALL of the questions on the draw card. She still won. As her children, she encouraged us to play outside and to create without the distractions of television or video games, to rise above peer pressure and to be independent. Shecould be fiery strictand stubborn but could laugh and make up silly songs and poems on a whim. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Marjorie Calhoun Voyles, Maxine Calhoun Wilson and infant brother, J.D. Calhoun. She is survived by her two daughters, Briana Blanchard Michael of Massachusetts and Maureen Head Butch of Texas, grandchildren, Garrett Blanchard and Emily Head, and many extended family and friends. A brief visitation will take place at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston on Monday September 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a graveside service at 3:00 p.m. at the Sibley Cemetery, Sibley, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, please honor Mom's memory witha donation to Louisiana Tech University, the Alzheimer's research or support organization of your choice, or your local Humane Society or SPCA.
