Funeral services for Doris Elaine Slade, 89, of Ruston, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 14, 2022 in the chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Rev. Paul Watts will officiate and interment will follow at Kilpatrick’s Memorial Gardens in Ruston. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at Kilpatrick Funeral Home.

Doris was born on August 4, 1932 in North Dakota and passed away on June 9, 2022 in Monroe, Louisiana. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ruston and retired as an x-ray technologist from Lady of the Sea Hospital in Cut Off, Louisiana.Doris was preceded in death by two daughters, Cathleen Ockman and Kim Slade and two husbands, Valton Slade and Don Anderson.

Doris is survived by her children, Cynthia Savoie and husband Steve of Dixon Springs, Tennessee, Jeff Slade and wife Margaret Anne of Ruston, Louisiana, Karen Farmer and husband Thomas of Ruston, Louisiana; eight grandchildren, Tori, Simone, Joshua, Holly, Jonathon, Sara, Matthew and Emily; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Braun; son-in-law, Bryan Ockman from West Monroe, Louisiana and many other cherished family and friends.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Farmer, Matthew Farmer, Joshua Ockman, Caleb Bishop, Jordan Bishop and Bryan Ockman.

Doris was a very happy, unselfish, and loving person throughout her whole life. She was born “on” a farm in ND and didn’t experience city life until moving to Dickinson ND at the age of 12, where she made lifelong friends. Doris’s admirable traits served her well, especially in the challenging life after moving from Washington State to Mississippi and Louisiana in the mid 1960’s. I am forever thankful to Doris and Valton for welcoming our Mother Harriet into their home in 1984 and for the love and care they gave her until she passed away in 1991. Doris: “The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”

1Corinthians15:26 says "The last enemy death is to be brought to nothing."

Mrs. Slade was a delightful lady who became my friend while a resident at the Arbor. I would see and greet her every morning that I was on duty, by stopping at her table in the dining room at breakfast. She always had a cheerful response to me and occasionally she would have a chore for me to do with which I would assist her in my duties as her "fix it" man. She always expressed her gratefulness for any help I gave her. I affectionately came to call her "Miss Doris", and she was a sweet and kind friend to me. May she rest in peace and may God grant her family solace and strength for their loss. We have all lost a truly lovely lady in Miss Doris.
