Bill Lea, born Billy Joe Lea, passed away October 11, 2018. Bill was born in Manning, Arkansas in 1938. In 1952 his family moved to Southern California. He soon joined the Army and served 4 years, traveling around the world. It was this experience which inspired his love for travel and experiencing new cultures.Bill joined the banking world upon his return from the service. He remained in the finance industry until the 80's not only in California, but, Alaska, Florida and Kansas. During these years Bill was instrumental in the computerization of several banks throughout the United States. He and his bride moved to Monroe and he eventually left banking to create his own insurance business. He was also active in the American Advertising Federation which is a unifying voice for advertising values in the NELA communities. One of his most proud achievements was to help raise funds to assist in the construction of the “Catwalk” located at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, which is an elevated walkway for patrons to view the majestic cats in their natural habitat. He received many awards for his contributions and creative talents.Bill was quite the character, always making us laugh with his quick wit and humor. He always had a quip, story or joke to share with the local bank teller, mailman, store clerk, neighbor, friend or Corporate Presidents. He loved to read and listen to music, owning over 1500 books and vinyl he had collected over his lifetime.In his years of retirement, Bill enjoyed his friends and family. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis; brother, Bob; and sister, Melba.Bill will missed by his brother-in-law, David; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Services will be held in Arkansas where he will be laid to rest where his life began.Rest in Peace, Billy Joe.
