Beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Mrs. Christene Cathey, was born on February 4, 1935. She passed peacefully and went to her heavenly home on February 15, 2024, at the age of 89. Christene was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and the rock of her family. She left a legacy of strong and unwavering faith. Nothing brought her more joy than being surrounded by family at Sunday lunch and holding her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Christene loved worshiping and serving in her church at Ouachita Baptist. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her tender hugs, and the joy she brought to everyone around her, especially when she whipped up her famous banana pudding. While her family already feels a great void because of her absence, they take comfort knowing she is in heaven, where she so desperately longed to be. They grieve with hope because she is healed, and they’ll be reunited with her one day.
Christene is survived by her daughter, Cindy Coates; her son, Kenny Coates; and her daughter-in-law, Diane Coates; her granddaughters, Alecia Bryant (Chris), Kelly Petty (Joe), Angel Coates, Alexis Thomas (David), Ashley Stone (Shawn), Laila Coates; grandsons, Kristopher Coates (Jasmine), Kameron Coates (Kasey), and Konnor Coates (Lanae). She is also survived by fifteen beautiful great-grandchildren.
Christene is preceded in death by her parents, William and Nettie Broom; brother, Malvin Broom (Dottie); her first husband, James Coates; late husband, Mike Cathey; her beloved son, Eugene Coates; grandson, Jeremy Coates; great-grandson, Leo Coates.
The family would like to thank Elara Caring Hospice for providing her with the best care. They would also like to thank her friends and family at Ouachita Baptist Church and Fair Park Baptist Church who’ve provided support and meals.
