Betty Payne, age 92, passed away March 17, 2022, in Jonesboro, Louisiana, after a period of declining health. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Betty Jean was born June 29, 1929, to William Lewis Bond and Alma McMillan Bond. She was the 12th of their 13 children to be born at home on “Bond Hill”. She graduated from Jonesboro-Hodge High School in 1946. Betty married Wilford Womack of Chatham, Louisiana on New Years Eve of 1948. They moved to Lubbock, Texas, where they were stationed at Reese Air Force Base. They were blessed with two sons, Michael Dowe in 1951 and Ronald Gene in 1952. After being widowed in 1956, she returned to Louisiana and attended business school in Shreveport, Louisiana.
She met and married Robert “Bob” Payne, stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in 1957. They welcomed a daughter, Peggy Elaine, in 1961 while stationed in Hawaii.
After retiring from Air Force life, they settled in Longview, Texas. When she wasn’t being a homemaker, she became involved in a few Ladies’ clubs and civic organizations. She worked in real estate and office management. She enjoyed reading, gardening, painting, and sewing. She also enjoyed fishing and having family visit her lake house on Caney Lake. She would call Longview home until she moved back home to Jonesboro, Louisiana in 2018 to live with her son, Ronnie.
She is preceded in death by both of her husbands, her parents, brothers; Billie, Buster, Douglas, Aubrey “Son”, Harry, Harold, and Jack Bond; sisters, Carrie Louise “Tot” Walworth, Audrey Golden, Elsie Kirkland, Lorraine “Renie” Hardy, and Margaret Hudson; daughter, Peggy Dolive; son, Michael Womack.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Womack (Lisa) of Jonesboro, Louisiana; son-in-law, Brian Dolive (Sheryl) of Longview, Texas; grandchildren, Lorie Womack Poulin (Fred) o Ruston, Louisiana, Ronald Womack, Jr. of Jonesboro, Louisiana, Emily Dolive Kiec (Adam) of Seattle, Washington, and Daniel Dolive (Catarina) of Nashville, Tennessee; great grandson, Gabe Poulin of Ruston, Louisiana.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 21, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Services will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Harlan Hall will be officiating. Interment will follow at Jonesboro Cemetery, Jonesboro, Louisiana under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, Louisiana.
She will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, and a treasured Aunt to her many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Forest Haven, Ruston Regional and Ascend Hospice for their loving care in this difficult time.
Pallbearers will be Harrell Bond, Jr., Eddie Gatlin, Gary Golden, Johnny Golden, Russ Golden, David Hudson, and Glen Kirkland. Honorary pallbearers will be Burl Brashear, Jr., Jimmie Bond Golden, Donnie Hudson, Ronald “Sonny” Kirkland and Jim Payne.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
