Arthur William Stone, retired director of Louisiana Tech Theatre, born in Bellows Falls, Vermont, died in Ruston, Louisiana Tuesday, February 13, 2007. Mr. Stone was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice and son Gregory, his parents Frank and Edith Stone Brothers, Frank and James Stone and sister, Frances McCarthy, Merwyn Green and Alice Stone. Mr. Stone is survived by his son, Christopher and his wife Kathy, sister, Gertrude Gilman and daughter-in-law, Jorenda Stone. Arthur Stone was educated at Hiram College, Case Western Reserve, and post graduate work at Louisiana State University. Prior to his college years he worked extensively in summer stock throughout New England, including Weston, Vermont, Portland, Maine, Boston, Massachusetts and the Martha's Vineyard. Mr. Stone enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a private and rose quickly to Major. His service included the Pentagon, Eglin Air force Base with General Doolittle and in Japan. He was assigned to Ordinance and served as a writer/ observer on the Manhattan Project. He was in the first observer plane following Hiroshima. In 1947 he accepted a one year appointment at Louisiana Tech as Technical Director of the Theater. He remained for 28 years as Director of Theatre retiring in 1975. Highlights of his Tech Career were his close association with the students throughout the University through the Tech Theatre Players, his annual Shakespearian production, and his 8 years serving on the Tech/Rome faculty. After retirement Arthur and his wife, Beatrice ran way and joined a tent circus as clowns for 10 years. Arthur turned his avocation and boyhood dream into a second profession. During and after his second retirement Arthur and Beatrice traveled the world and worked in their son's antique store continuing to meet and make friends. Mr. Stone was honored by La Tech in 2002 by the renaming of the Tech Theatre to Stone Theatre. This was a most fitting tribute to continue his legacy of student thespian production for generations to come. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kilpatrick's Funeral Home in Ruston. The service will be at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 504 Tech Drive, Ruston Thursday, February 15 at 10:30 A.M. Memorials may be made to the Stone Theatre's Fund, Louisiana Tech, or the Gregory P. Stone Memorial Award fund, Louisiana Tech Alumni Association. — Nicholas W.
