Cooter loved his family with a true and deep love…family who were related by birth and family related by love. His wife, Elizabeth, and two daughters, and then grandchildren, always came first with him.
Born in Dean, LA, raised on the Ouachita River, he traveled to California and across the Pacific Ocean with the Navy (Uncle Sam provided that adventure), and then, on to the Bahamas where he helped build a solar salt operation. Hard work and long hours were the norm. Cooter didn’t mind that–he didn’t know how to NOT work hard.
Cooter was an avid fisherman and hunter. He mastered the art of saltwater fishing during his 39 years in the Bahamas. After retiring from Morton Salt, he and his wife moved to Sterlington. Cooter said they found the perfect place to retire, right on Bayou Bartholomew where he switched his focus to catching bass. Up to a few months ago, folks were still dropping by to ask him “what bait do I need to use” even though he stopped fishing at the young age of 92.
While in the Bahamas, Cooter accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. Per Cooter, that was the best decision he ever made. He served as a deacon in the Inagua Gospel Chapel for 22 years where he taught the adult Sunday School class and preached many times during the years. He informed his daughters when they were very young that if the church doors were open the family would be there…and they were…every time! Cooter is now a member of Paron Baptist Church in Sterlington.
Cooter was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; parents George and Bessie Jacobs, brothers, George (GA), Dub and Herman Jacobs; sister, Joyce Pruitt; nephews, Alvin and Dubby Jacobs, and David Pruitt.
He is survived by his daughters, Janice Roberts of Long Beach, MS and husband, Marty, Dorothy Hiers of Picayune, MS and husband, Gainer, Claire Mayeux of Monroe, LA; grandson, Jordan Davis; granddaughter, Hilary Cabezas and husband, David; great grandson, Stephen Henry and wife, Molly; great-great grandchildren, Kolbie, Brody, and Owen; brothers, Don and Jerral Jacobs and wife, Glenda; and many other family and friends.
