William Sanders Bill Baskin of Ruston, 93, passed away at home on Monday, July 18, 2016. Bill was born in Crowville, LA on November 13, 1922 to Sanders and Gladys Kinman Baskin. He graduated from Ruston High School and received a baccalaureate degree in business from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1942. Bill served both as an active and reserve officer as Major in the USAF from 1942 to 1965, flying P-38, P-39, P-40 and his favorite, the P-51 Mustang. He was selected with six other pilots to be in the first experimental jet fighter squadron test flying the XP-59A.Bill was founder and owner of Ruston Glass & Mirror that opened for business in 1949. He continued to maintain interest in the company as Chairman alongside co-owner and company President David Gulledge and Manager Joey Gulledge. Thanks are extended to the Gulledge family for their dedication, support and management of his business over the years.Bill enjoyed the sport of golf from his military days to the end-of-life and diligently worked over the years to refine his game. At every opportunity he would swing his club, playing as well as people half his age. Another avocation was playing Bridge through college and beyond. His many loves other than his wife and family were flying, golfing and DANCING to the Big Band Era music!He was preceded in death by his wife, Dean Salyer Baskin, a faithful companion for 57 years. Immediate family survivors include a very special sister, Sara Ann Baskin Napper of Ruston, LA; children: Ret. Colonel Toney W. Baskin, M.D. and wife, Melody, of San Antonio, TX; Sandra and Charles W. Berry of Dallas TX; and Karen and Larry VanDyke of Ruston, LA. Grandchildren include Wade Baskin and wife Bethany, Shannon Baskin, Dean Baskin, Capt. Lucas Baskin and wife Capt. Markinina Baskin, Jessica Bates and husband Joshua, Amanda Berry, Angela Yeoman and husband Kevin, Troy Lacobee and wife Kari, Kimberly Glorieux and husband Stephen, and Jason VanDyke. Great grandchildren include Anna Katherine, Austin, and Claire Baskin; Emma, Ella, Kade, Amelia and Matilda Bates; Ashley, Hunter and Britney Oakes; Colton and Tyler Lacobee; Nicolas and Christopher Glorieux; Shiloh and Jackson Baskin. Other close relatives include nieces Suzan Martin and husband Wallace, Katherine Freeman and husband James, and Laura Champion and husband Greg Champion, M.D.He leaves behind a very devoted caregiver, Rosalyn Rhone, who cared for wife Dean first and then Mr. Bill since 2006. Also assisting in his care were Katherine Jones and Rachelle Lathon.Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Ruston, LA. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 pm at the church and burial at the Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers include David Gulledge, Johnny Van Osdell, Wade Baskin, Troy Lacobee, Kevin Yeoman, Hunter Oakes, Austin Baskin, and Dean Baskin.
