Walker E. “Windy” Denham was born November 3, 1930 to George E. and Vera Denham in Bernice, LA. Windy passed away December 5, 2020, at the age of 90 in Ruston, LA. Due to the pandemic, the family will have a private family service at Shiloh Cemetery in Bernice, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. The service will be streamed on First Baptist Church Bernice Facebook page at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 8, 2020.
Windy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George E. “Pete” Denham, Jr.; daughter, Carol Rene’ Wheelus; and loving wife of 66 years, Reatha Goss Denham.
He is survived by 2 daughters: Charlotte Bowen (Johnny) of Bernice and Kathy Tyson (Vernon) of Leesville; four grandchildren: Leon Wheelus (Tracy), Geoff Deason (Rachel), Lensie Stanley (Justin), and Michael Wheelus (Becky); seven great-grandchildren: Tristan and Carlie Wheelus, Alyssa Deason, Katelynn and Dillon Stanley, and Knox and Cruz Wheelus; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Harkins (Bobby) and Connie Turner (Bill); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Windy was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Bernice. He was well known in Bernice as the owner of Windy’s Cafe. He loved helping others and making them laugh. He never met a stranger and could not go anywhere without seeing someone he knew. He loved to “Shoot the Moon” in a good game of Rook. But the most important lesson he taught his children, he taught by example. In 1964, when his dad became disabled, Windy moved his family back to Bernice so that he could be there to take care of his parents. He also took on the responsibility of caring for his aging grandparents, great uncle and aunt and never let a day go by without visiting them. As his loved ones aged and needed nursing home care, Windy continued to visit daily and insured they were getting the best care possible. His love and dedication to family continues to live on in his children and grandchildren.
The family has enjoyed hearing the memories friends have shared through social media and would cherish hearing others. Please share them on Facebook, messenger, or by mail to Charlotte Bowen, 281 Denham Road, Bernice, LA 71222.
The family would like to thank Thomas Little and the staff at Alpine Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation and Compassus Hospice of Ruston for their loving care.
With Windy’s love of children, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to First Baptist Church, 502 Cherry Street, Bernice, LA 71222 for a new playground area for the children.
