Ruth Davis Cooley, age 85, of Monroe, passed away on the 5th of March 2014 after a brief illness. She was born to Jeff and Magdalene Davis in Leakesville, Mississippi on June 12, 1928. Her childhood was spent on the family farm, becoming very involved in sports as she entered high school. She married her high school sweetheart Malcolm Cooley from Lucedale, Mississippi in 1946. Shortly after, they moved to Monroe, Louisiana where Ruth began working as a secretary and teaching accounting at the college. She then developed a typing and copying service for business clients, court reporting, and churches. The business grew and in 1948, she founded Cooley Printers and Lithographers, now known as Cooley Printers. She had five daughters, supporting them in sports, music, and activities on the river, while being very involved in the community, including running for Mayor of Monroe. Ruth had a very strong faith, taught her Sunday School class and faithfully attended Parkview Baptist Church on Forsythe. She represented class, strength, beauty, and integrity and her favorite saying was “straight forward and unafraid.”She is survived by her 5 daughters: Malva (Bobby) Rutledge, Rhonda (James) Counselman, Sharron (Greg) Ochs, Cyndi (Larry) Cormier, and Joy (Mike) Ryan. Sisters: Margaret Moore of Alabama, and Faye Avard of Monroe; Brother: Pat Davis of Alabama. Grandchildren: Jim (Natasha) Murphy, Jackie (Dave) Dubuy, Vanessa (James) Clark, Ebert VanBuren, Jr., Tamara (Jarrett) Spurgeon, Jessica (Robert) England, Jed (Kari) Counselman, Gregory (Jessica) Ochs, Joni Cormier, Josie Cormier, Jamie (Cammy) Cormier, Jarrod Cormier, Jennifer Levy, Madison Ryan; along with numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Malcolm Cooley; Brother, Jeff Buck Davis and Grandson, Kevin Rutledge.Visitation will be at Parkview Baptist Church Chapel on Forsythe Avenue in Monroe from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the afternoon on Sunday, March 9th. Funeral services will be held at Parkview Baptist Church Forsythe Avenue, beginning at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 10th with Rev. Erby Burgess presiding. Gravesite service will follow at 5:00 PM in Leakesville, Mississippi at Sweetwater Baptist Church Cemetery with Billy Dan Moore, nephew, presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude, that memorial contributions be made in Ruth Cooley‚ name to Parkview Baptist Church Youth Group.
