Funeral services for Roy M. Steele, 86, of West Monroe, will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, September 15, 2014 in the chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe with Rev. Jon Lord and Dr. Mark Fenn officiating. Interment will follow at Hasley Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe.Mr. Steele was born March 13, 1928 in Monroe, LA and passed away September 11, 2014 in West Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Milton Steele and Alma Olivia May Steele, and his first wife and mother of his children, Gloria Maxine Sechler Steele. Mr. Steele graduated from LSU with a double major in Physics and Electrical Engineering. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of West Monroe, LA. Roy was an accomplished woodworker and blacksmith (iron working). He loved bass fishing, and enjoyed square dancing and travel with his wife. He was very talented at antique and furniture restoration. He also enjoyed a good auction and told a good story.Mr. Steele is survived by his wife, Betty D. Barton Steele; children, Steven Michael Steele, Lisa Ann S. Lord and husband Jon, Deborah Maxine Perleberg and Diane Barton Poche; grandchildren, Kelley Poche Rodriguez, Barton John Poche, Claire Michelle Poche, M.D., Jon Stephen Lord, Derek Steele Lord, Ryan Christopher Lord, Brandon Davis Shaffer, Caleb Scott Shaffer and Elijah Joseph Perleberg; great-grandson, Hayes Macyle Lord.Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, the Gideons or the charity of your choice.Visitation will be held Monday, September 15, 2014 from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe.Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.kilpatrickfuneralhomes.com Kilpatrick Funeral HomeWest Monroe, LA

My heartfelt condolences to Papa's countless loved ones and friends. I met him over 20 years ago on a trip to Monroe with Bart and the family, and Papa immediately took me in as one of his own. My favorite memory is when he took me fishing, just the two of us, and taught me how to really fish. We spent hours together and had a great time even though we didn't catch anything. I'll miss you Papa and keep you in my heart forever. God bless you and let's catch something in the next life.
