Funeral services for Archie “Ray” Moore, 100, of Monroe, will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 25, 2023 in the chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Calhoun, Louisiana. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe.
Ray was born on June 22, 1922 in Rayville, Louisiana and was in eternal rest on January 21, 2023 in Monroe, Louisiana. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. Ray received paratrooper training at Ft. Benning then went to the Philippines and landed for the invasion of Leyte Island. After taking Leyte, the 11th moved to Luzon, retaking Manila. Then took part in “The Great Raid” of Los Banos Prison camp where the Japanese held starving allied civilians. All were freed with no casualties. After the Japanese surrender the 11th was sent to Tokyo as the very first occupation force. Ray was a retired carpenter who loved building things, an avid fisherman, and loved telling his fish stories and he planted a garden every year. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Mary Elizabeth Moore; siblings, Fannie Hosley, Sarah Murphy, Novie Morace, Sadie Cook, Herbie Moore, Claude Moore, and Charles Moore.
Ray is survived by his wife, Helen Marie Brownlee Moore; children, Beverly Whetstone and husband Kevin, Linda Fontana and husband S.J., Bob Moore, and Mike Mayes; grandchildren, Robert Moore (Trudy), Alicia Pitts (Josh), Shawn Mayes, Chris Mayes (Sara), Lindsey Moore (Chad), Nicholas Fontana (Madison) and Lauren Fontana; eleven great-grandchildren many nieces, nephews, cousins and other cherished family and friends.
The family would like to thank the sitters, Eve Worthy, Mitzi Smith and Kendricka Young that cared for him during his time on hospice. We also would like to thank Compassus Hospice Care and Allegiance Hospice Care for their compassion during Mr. Moore’s illness.
Pallbearers will be Nicholas Fontana, Hunter Pitts, Noah Pitts, Rob Moore, Shawn Mayes, Chris Mayes and Zane McKenzie.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob Wilsher, Jerry Sandifer, Randall Carver and Fred Freeland.
