Ora “Jean” Taylor Stancil Smith, 93, departed this earth on December 8, 2024. Born in Downsville, she graduated Downsville High School and Northeast Louisiana Vocational School of Nursing and worked at Glenwood Hospital of West Monroe. Jean began working at Sears, making draperies, upon moving into the banking and business institutions before finding her career in nursing.
As a member of the First West Church of West Monroe, Jean was a dedicated member of the choir.
Jean was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star on November 12, 1965. She progressed to the position of Worthy Grand Matron of the State of Louisiana, in the Order of the Eastern Star in April of 2023. Jean served faithfully for 59 years as a member of the Order.
Jean was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Mack Stancil; first husband, Ollie Mack Stancil; second husband, Deuel Coily Smith; parents, James Sherwood Taylor and Pauline Bearden Taylor; and brother, Garvis Taylor.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Billie Jean Stancil Christy and husband J.C.; daughter-in-law, Mollie J. Roberts Stancil; sister, W. Sue Taylor Istre; grandchildren, Garvis Dwayne Christy and wife Michele, Ginger Devonne Christy Willis and husband Matthew, Belinda Jean Christy Hamilton and husband John, Jimmy Mack Stancil, Jr., and Ronnie Wayne Stancil; great-grandchildren, Kristin Pauline Willis Tyler, Billie Suzanne Willis Hooper and husband Mark, Ryan Thomas Hamilton and wife Sami, Lauren Taylor Christy, Harley Michelle Stancil, Tommy Blake Stancil, and Harley Elexis Toney; and her legacy continues to grown with 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers serving will be Johnny Carl Rowell, Matthew Willis, Jimmy Mack Stancil, Jr., Ronnie Wayne Stancil, Jay Russell, Stephen Stancil Plummer, Jamie Taylor, and Buddy Taylor.
