Opal Phillips LylesKilpatrick Funeral HomeRuston, LAFuneral services for Opal Phillips Lyles, 91, of Ruston will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday March 18, 2015 at Temple Baptist Church chapel with Dr. Reggie Bridges and Bro. Dale Oden officiating. Interment will follow at Cook Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Ruston. Visitation will be at the church from 1PM until time of service. She was born May 11, 1923 in Quitman, LA and passed away at her residence on March 15, 2015 after a brief illness.Opal attended Quitman High School where she graduated Valedictorian. She enjoyed all sports, especially basketball. Opal was a rivet-inspector in New Orleans during WWII, attended business school in Shreveport, and sang in the community for revivals and funerals with Quitman Quartet on the radio. Opal had a beautiful voice, and sang for many years with the church choir at Temple Baptist. She went on many church bus trips. Opal loved cooking for her family and friends, made jelly to give in Christmas gift bags for everyone, enjoyed camping weekends, fishing, and planting flowers in her yard. Opal worked for 45 years as bookkeeper at National Jewelry Co. in Ruston.Opal was a devoted wife and loving mother who will be forever missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie Washington Phillips and Beadie Blalock Phillips; her husband, Howard Lyles; son, Howard Lyles, Jr; infant great granddaughter, Katherine Blade; brothers: J.W. Phillips Jr, J.B. Phillips, Lamont Phillips and wife Bettye Thomas Phillips; sisters: Arline Phillips Brooks and husband T.L. Brooks; and Mareda Phillips Baggarly and husband Stewart Baggarly.She is survived by her brother, Steve Phillips and wife Nell; daughters: Joyce Ann Johnston and Janice Beasley Irby and husband Claud; and daughter-in-law, Sue Flowers Lyles.Opal had six grandchildren: Al Johnston and wife Teressa, Matt Johnston, Troy Beasley and wife Lelani, Becky Beasley Mills and husband Darryl, Susan Beasley White and husband Ted, Crystal Lyles Blade and husband Joe. There are ten great grandchildren: Casey Johnston, Stephen Beasley and wife Samantha, Katie Beasley , Justin Mills and wife Elyse, Garrett Mills, Shelby Webb , Savannah Webb, Emma White, Joseph Dylan Blade and Brooklyn Blade. Also three great great grandchildren; Carolina Hedgepeth, Georgia Beasley and Brooklynne Parker Mills. Mrs. Opal is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Pallbearers will be Troy Beasley, Al Johnston, Matt Johnston, Stephen Beasley, Justin Mills and Garrett Mills.Honorary pallbearers will be Darryl Mills, Ted White and Casey Johnston.
