Jerry was born on January 25, 1934 in Holly Ridge, Louisiana and passed away on May 19, 2025 in West Monroe, surrounded by family. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Jerry was preceded in death by her husband, Ray K. Calloway: parents, Mellie and James Douglas; brothers, Earl, George and Marshall Douglas; sisters, Helen Landby and Elsie Justice.
Jerry graduated from Rayville High School in 1952. She had her sights set on becoming a registered nurse and received her RN Degree from Northwestern State College in 1956, despite facing numerous hardships. Jerry did not give up, ever! She met her first husband just after graduation and they lived in Washington, D.C., Indiana and Wisconsin. She became a stay-at-home wife and mother while she raised their two sons. That marriage ended after her children were grown and she moved back to her home state of Louisiana. She returned to her nursing career and reacquainted with a childhood family friend, Ray Calloway. They married in 1989 and enjoyed 31 years together. Jerry and Ray had a wonderful marriage and loved gardening, quilting, square dancing, volunteering and a very active church life at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
Jerry is survived by her sons, Glenn W. Nielson, Jr. of St. Paul, MN, James Edwin Nielson and wife Sharon of Madison. Wi; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Joy Nielson, MD of Santa Barbara, CA; grandsons, Liam O’Sullivan and Aaron O’Sullivan, both of Madison, WI; and sisters, Betty D. Crawford and husband Ken, and Donna D. McLaughlin, all of West Monroe, LA, along with numerous extended family and friends
The family would like to thank Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate and loving care of Jerry during her extended illness.
