Long time Ruston resident, Mike Reed, passed away on Thursday morning, February 6, 2014 at Northern Louisiana Medical Center. He was 88 years old.Mike was born in Centreville, Mississippi, on June 15, 1925 and was named for his father, Courtney Reed, Sr., but was best known as Mike.Visitation will be Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Trinity Methodist Church from 12:00-1:00 PM. Reverend Brian Mercer will lead the memorial service at 1:00 PM at Trinity Methodist Church of Ruston. A graveside service will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.Mike attended Ruston schools, and rose to Eagle Scout ranking in his Ruston troop. Mike is remembered for being a member of the 1941 Ruston High School State Championship Football Team. Mike Reed‚ football and college years at Tech began in 1942. Mike became an Army Air Corps B-25 pilot trained to snag troop and equipment gliders that were stationary at the snag. After returning from WWll, Mike developed into Louisiana Tech‚ first player to be named Little All American twice, 1946 and 1947. In 1946, the Bulldogs upended the Ole Miss Rebels 7 to 6. That year Ole Miss Players named Mike Reed to their all opponent team.In 1947 Mike was named to Who‚ Who at Louisiana Tech. The friendships and close bonds made during his Louisiana Tech football career endured to the present and became known as the National Association for Advancement of Grandstand Quarterbacks (N.A.A.G.Q.) Louisiana Tech named Mike to its second class of inductees into its Sports Hall of Fame. More recently, Mike was named to Tech‚ Team of the Century.Mike declined the opportunity to play for the Chicago Bears and instead chose to continue working with his father in the sawmilling business, a family endeavor started by Mike‚ grandfather, William Nathan Reed of Magnolia, Arkansas.At Army Air Corps pilot school in Lansing, Michigan, Mike met Suzanne Anderson at a dance for pilots given by her sorority. The two danced the first dance. They celebrated 65 years of marriage and were parents of two sons and two daughters.Over the years, Reed sawmills and plants employed hundreds of men and women in various locations across Louisiana. Mike and his father Courtney became recognized as survivors in the cyclical sawmilling industry.Mike Reed was preceded by his wife Sue; his parents Courtney Sr. and Christine Reed; his sisters, Martha R. Wojecki and Vicky R. Mabry; and by his brother-in-law and Tech teammate, Chester Wojecki.Surviving Mike Reed are his sons Courtney Ill of Ruston, Russell and wife JoAnn of Destrehan; daughter Jennifer Terzia and husband Buddy of Ruston; and by daughter Marcia Coley and husband David of Suwanee, Georgia.Grandchildren include Amanda R. Archuleta, Katie Reed, Greg Terzia and wife Audrey, Laura T. Bankston and husband Matt, Zachary and Alex Coley and eight great grandchildren.Mike will be remembered most for his gentle and humble spirit and unconditional love for everyone he knew. He had many friends whom he loved dearly and helped him live a long and happy life.The family wishes to thank Dr. Ben Grigsby, Dorothy Hopkins, Denise Hadnot and James Cage for all their tireless efforts in caring for him especially during his final days.Pall Bearers will be Matt Bankston, Zachary Coley, Alex Coley, Drew Jones, Rowdy Sewell and Greg Terzia.Honorary Pall Bearers will be Charles Hoffman, Billy James, Richard Deacon Jones, W.A.
