Memorial Services for Mrs. Melba Crawford Barmore of Dubach, LA, age 90, will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Temple Baptist Church in Ruston. Officiating will be Dr. Reggie Bridges, Senior Pastor of Temple, and Rev. Barry Joiner, a former pastor of Mrs. Barmore. The Memorial Service will be preceded by a family graveside Interment Service at Colvin Memorial Cemetery in Unionville, LA, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Terry Ganey, a long-time family friend. Visitation for Mrs. Barmore will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Temple Baptist Church.Melba Barmore was born on August 28, 1924, in the Hilly community of Lincoln Parish, the daughter of Claude David Crawford and Thelma Alexander Crawford. She departed this life on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at her home in Hilly following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Barmore was preceded in death by her parents; by her beloved husband of 46 years, S.J. Barmore; by a brother, Emmett Lee Crawford; and by a foster-brother, Clyde Hartwell Crawford and his wife Carmen Alexander Crawford. She is survived by her children, sons Donald Wayne Barmore and Michael Judson Barmore, both of Dubach, and daughter Glynda Barmore Hicks and her husband Samuel Maurice Hicks, Jr., of Shreveport; by three grandchildren, Christy Hicks Traylor and husband Adam Traylor of Shreveport, Tyler Hicks and wife Kim Owens Hicks of San Diego, CA, and Whitney Hicks of Redondo Beach, CA; by one brother, J.D. Crawford of Dubach; by one sister, Ruby Crawford Ellis of Dubach; by three sisters-in-law, Patsy Barmore Critselous of Ruston, Alice Barmore Heaberlin and husband Vance Heaberlin of Minden, LA, and Jerri Grafton Crawford of Dubach; and by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.Pallbearers will be Mrs. Barmore nephews; Brent Crawford of Ruston, Davey Crawford of Dubach, Larry Crawford of Dubach, Rocky Crawford of Dubach, Stanley Crawford of Dubach, Tyler Hicks of San Diego, CA, Dana Porter of Dubach, and Greg Porter of Dubach.Melba Barmore life was linked to Lincoln Parish from beginning to end. Not only was she born and reared in Lincoln Parish, she was educated in Lincoln Parish schools, graduating from Ruston High School in 1941 and earning Bachelor and Master, degrees and Plus 30 certification from Louisiana Tech. For 25 years, she was employed as an English teacher in Lincoln Parish schools, most of that time at Dubach High School, where she touched the lives of hundreds of students.Mrs. Barmore life was also a testimony to loving service service to her God and her church, service to her family, and service to her community. Her 46 year marriage to S.J. Barmore was a model of love, devotion, and service. She served as a Sunday school teacher, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and as an English as a Second Language teacher for Friendship International, often bringing her students home with her so they could enjoy family interaction. She especially enjoyed teaching people of all ages the joy of firing, painting, and glazing ceramics. Mrs. Barmore was quite a talented artist who loved and excelled in oil painting, filling her home with paintings on canvas,mostly from nature waterfowl, quail, and flowers, particularly roses and magnolias. Mrs. Betty Cox awakened in her a fascination for china painting. Until she was crippled by a stroke in 1998, she produced many beautiful works of art on china. Following her stroke, she paintedbird houses using her left hand; most of these she gave away to friends and relatives. A skilled seamstress, she made many of her own clothes, as well as clothes for her family, her neighbors, and her friends. Melba Barmore vibrant love of life and her selfless devotion to serving people will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. The family appreciates the loving and compassionate care provided to Mrs. Barmore by Dr. Shane Phillips and the staff of The Hospice of Caring Hearts, particularly nurses Richard Hinton and Brandy Ellis. Your steadfast care, support, and availability have made this difficult time much easier for the family. The Barmore family also offers a kind word of appreciation to Mrs. Barmore companion and sitter, Reita Reeves.
