Maude Elizabeth “Mamaw” Brewster, age 99, went home into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her beloved family Sunday, March 26th, 2023. Maude was one of seven children born on East Sibley Road to Laura (Roach) and James Davis, February 6th, 1924.
She was a country girl who could out fish the men and snatch the snakes out of the chicken houses. Mamaw made her life impact from start to finish in the Sibley community. She graduated from Choudrant High School and was a faithful lifelong member of Alabama Presbyterian Church. She married her sweetheart O.L. Brewster September 21, 1946 and settled on farm land just down the road from where she was raised. Together they brought up their four children that would not scatter far.
Mamaw shared her UNCONDITIONAL love to all those she called family. She never missed a birthday card or a chance to listen to her kids tell her a story. BUT it was rumored by the more unruly grandchildren that she would have you go pick out your own peach limb for a switch if you got out of line.
She was strong both in her faith and in her spirited determination. She was so competitive she couldn’t stand to lose checkers to her sister or dominoes to her grand children. Mamaw’s signature color was red. She was known as the neighborhood chicken strangler, walker of a million miles, collector of random things, and fisher of many ponds. She loved kitty cats and beautiful flowers-notably her blue hydrangeas.
She was the best fried chicken cooker, purple pea sheller, and ice tea swirler you will ever meet. She was and forever will be our matriarch, our glue, and our reason the roots of love run so deep in this family.
It is likely Mamaw was greeted at the heavenly gates by her husband of 74 years O.L. To her he probably said “where you been gal youngin” and to him, “where you been ole man?”
We know Bobby Ledford was there to see she made it in alright along with her mother and father, her siblings, nieces, nephews, and great grand baby Jamie. What a glorious day!
Left to carry on her legacy here are her four children: Charlotte Sue and husband Terry Williams, Lydia Laurice Ledford, James Loyd Brewster and wife Chris, Karen Elizabeth and husband K.D. Williams; ten grandchildren: Petina Williams, Joe Williams and wife Brandie, Jan and husband Marty Lewis, Tonya and husband Eric McCulloch, Linzie and husband Jeremy Hebert, Robert Brewster, Jennifer and husband Nathan Guy, Jonathon Brewster and wife Brittany, Kyle Williams and wife Jill, Kadie and husband Pate Claborn; thirty one great grandchildren and nine great -great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
