Funeral services for Marvin Louis Smith, Jr., 91, will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 10, 2018 in the Feazel Chapel located at First West Church, West Monroe, LA with Rev. Mark Fenn and Rev. Scotty Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM just preceding the funeral service.Mr. Smith passed away on Monday, February 5 of natural causes. He was born November 1, 1926 in Alexandria, Louisiana to Marvin Louis Smith, Sr. and Ione Johnson. He served as a navigator on troop transport ships in the United States Navy during WWII. He graduated with a degree in Personnel Administration and Labor Relations from the University of Arkansas in 1949. Mr. Smith worked in labor relations for the U.S. Department of Labor for 6 years then spent the rest of his career at Olinkraft, Inc./Manville/Riverwood and retired as Vice President, Administration. He and his wife, Rosemary, who he married July 20, 1946 called West Monroe home for 60 years. They were married for 71 years until her death on December 30, 2017.Mr. Smith is survived by his three children-Marvin Smith (Beth), Marsha Ramsey (Dean), Carole Rye (Chip), seven grandchildren – Christin Smith (Cameron), Chad Smith (Becca), William Ramsey, Christina Ramsey, Rachel Rye Neal (Bryan), Rebekah Rye Toney (Kaden), and Hannah Rye, seven great grandchildren-Hudson, Laurel and Lainey Smith, Carter, Mason, Silas and Rosemary Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.Mr. Smith was a beloved member of First West for 60 years where he served as a Deacon and Chairman of the Personnel Committee for many years. He was much valued for his wise counsel and dry sense of humor. He is also remembered fondly for his work with High School Seniors in Sunday school. Mr. Smith worked tirelessly for the Dixie Youth Baseball Program in West Monroe first as a coach then holding various offices on the state and national levels with the organization for some 25 years. After retiring from Manville he served 12 years as City Alderman for West Monroe (1982-1994). He served on the Board of Directors of many organizations including Industrial Development of Northeast Louisiana, American Red Cross, United Way, West Monroe Boys Club, West Monroe Rotary Club, West Monroe Chamber of Commerce, Glenwood Regional Medical Center, American Heart Assoc., and Salvation Army. Marvin and his wife, Rosemary, were avid St. Louis Cardinal and Arkansas Razorback fans. His children and grandchildren are very grateful for his legacy of devotion to God, family and service to others.Memorials may be made to First West Church, 500 Pine Street, West Monroe.
